England defender Jess Carter admitted that she felt “comfortable” because her teammate Lauren James was not the only player to miss a penalty against Sweden during the quarter -finals in the euro.

“When talking about the effect of abuse on it,” Carter added. “This makes you feel very small. It makes you feel unimportant, and that you are not valuable.

“It makes you guess everything you do – it’s not a nice place. It doesn’t make me feel confident in returning to the field. My family has also destroyed it and very sad.”

Mark Polingham, CEO of the Football Association, said during the tournament that the ruling body had referred the “abusive” abuse to the UK police.
