Hollywood is all about franchises, for example. Finding the right material to turn into a large and profitable property no matter how ill-advised they are. (I’m looking at you, Dark Universe.) However, every once in a while, a movie comes along that seems tailor-made for an extended cinematic universe — a movie that, had it been made 20 or 30 years ago, would have generated popular acclaim. A franchise with at least five movies, direct to DVD sequels. I’m talking about the likes of “The Pope’s Exorcist” and 2023’s “The Beekeeper.”

The latter film was released in 2024, and follows Jason Statham as Adam Clay, an ordinary beekeeper who happens to be an ex-assassin working for a secret government organization known as (you guessed it!) The Beekeepers. After his elderly neighbor and girlfriend is defrauded of her money in a phishing scheme, Clay decides not to retire and begins punishing the entire phishing operation. Only, it’s not just some random guy on his computer, but a process that gets to the top in more ridiculous ways than you can imagine. This delightfully silly film would also make a great double feature with “Thelma,” a film that treats elder phishing in a completely different but no less entertaining way.

Reviews were mostly favorable for “The Beekeeper”, especially regarding Statham’s performance. /The film’s Ben Pearson was less enthusiastic in his own reviewadmittedly comparing the film unfavorably to “John Wick” while still acknowledging that “there are a lot of fun moments here, and audiences who want nothing more than to beat up Jason Statham will certainly be satisfied.”

All the same “beekeeper” It became the first box office hit film of 2024and is now gaining a second wind on live streaming. according to Flex PatrolThe movie is currently one of the top 10 most watched movies on Prime Video, and you should watch it as soon as possible.

Statham’s The Beekeeper is pure, funny fun

Not only does “The Beekeeper” have good action scenes, it also has ridiculously fun ones like Statham throwing a pot of honey at a machine gun-wielding villain, then throwing a lighter at the spilled honey, causing the villain to swallow it. Flames because – as another character explains – honey is “flammable as f***”. It’s a scene so good that it inspired not one, but two /Film employees Test whether honey is actually flammable. Unfortunately, unless Statham mixes his honey with kerosene, honey is not actually flammable.

What makes the film shine is not only the action, but also the unique mythology it plays into, making the world of “The Beekeeper” feel bigger and ripe for more stories. It’s DTV’s sillier version of “John Wick,” and if this can become a major franchise, this should be too. Plus, unlike “John Wick,” this movie is single-mindedly determined to take on the establishment, and ends with a wholly bizarre, startling conclusion that’s worth pursuing in a sequel.
