James Gunn feels that these two controversial films helped shape his career

Some of the best world builders are those who go against the grain, and no one fits that description better than James Gunn. after It only takes three minutes to create Infinity Stones In the Marvel Cinematic Universe or controversial changes Clark Kent’s (David Corensweet) Kryptonian parents in “Superman” Mixing things up has proven to be one of the writer/director’s greatest skills. However, there was a time when Gunn took a risk early in his career that was not well received, but it is now considered one of the best choices he ever made.

In an interview with GQGunn recalls being asked to work on the 2004 remake of “Dawn of the Dead,” which would be directed by Zack Snyder, which led to One of the greatest remakes ever. Daring to go beyond the classic film by George A. Romero in 1978 and recently turning Scrappy-Doo into a villain in 2002’s “Scooby-Doo,” Gunn has been shaking things up a bit. Unfortunately, fans didn’t like these actions, who made that very clear.

“It seems like I’ve been at the center of all this controversy from the beginning,” Gunn posited. “But ‘Dawn of the Dead,’ you know, people found out it was going to be remade, and there was an online petition to stop production of ‘Dawn of the Dead’ with hundreds of thousands of signatures.”

From there, Gunn’s career became one closely watched by many fans, and was eventually silenced when both “Dawn of the Dead” and “Scooby-Doo” proved successful in their own right.

Looking back now, Gunn seems glad he had the experiences he did when dealing with two very different properties that were very close to the hearts of their respective fan bases. “All of a sudden, I was on Page Six in the New York Post, you know, because of Dawn of the Dead as a screenwriter, and, you know, screenwriters, like, aren’t really famous, especially a guy who’s just written a hit movie.”

It was a fanfare experience that undoubtedly prepared him for the years to come, and now fans of two of the biggest comic universes – Marvel and DC – trust him even with the gambles he chooses to take while doing so. “There was the ‘Scooby-Doo’ controversy, and the ‘Dawn of the Dead’ controversy. So, in a way, I was involved in these projects that generated all this controversy for one reason or another, and that led to the present day.”

It’s been a long and fraught road for Gunn, marked by turning points that introduced us to friendly talking trees and new attitudes to heroes who are faster than speeding bullets, and it has certainly been worth the journey.
