It’s time for AI to learn how to do laundry

There’s a new tech company that claims to have found the solution to one of humanity’s most mundane tasks, and CNET’s ground team got to see the products in action in action. Consumer Electronics Show 2025.

Laundry robots designed by Tenet We hope it is a new and more effective way to wash and dry your clothes. During the huge technology exhibition here in Las Vegas, Tenet teamed up with TCL Globalunveiled two separate prototypes with the same goal: making your life easier.

The smaller of the two is egg-shaped and features a mechanical arm that dries your clothes inside the machine. My first impression was that it looks very small, so no matter how efficiently it works, it may not get the full job done quickly.

But there’s another feature that could be groundbreaking if it works: the company says it can fold laundry, too. We haven’t seen this in action yet, so we can’t speak to its effectiveness. (Although we will note that Folding laundry robots made a splash at CES In the past and it didn’t get anywhere.)

It’s also still unclear how many pieces of clothing it can hold and dry at one time, but if it’s actually a three-in-one machine that can wash, dry and fold on its own, it could revolutionize the world of laundry.

There was also a separate front loading washing machinewhich the company refers to as the AI-powered clothing recognition model, looks very promising. Using cameras and light sensors inside the device, Tenet says it will learn the best way to wash your clothes so they stay looking as great and clean as possible. Hence, when the washing is done, it will also dry your clothes. (We’ll note that built-in washers and dryers have been around for years and haven’t been very good at the drying part at all.)

Is this the key to cleaner, smarter laundry?

It uses an AI-powered clothing recognition model — which appears to be able to hold a much larger load of laundry than an egg-shaped AI laundry robot — artificial intelligence To determine the best way to wash your clothes. The washing machine can detect exactly what type of clothes you have put in the washing machine and how many items within seconds of closing the door.

If you put a dark-colored item of clothing in a load of white clothes, the smart screen in the washing machine will give you a quick warning that the color may bleed. After the warning, you have two options. You can either remove the dark garment from the load or leave it in and let the washer choose the best cycle to prevent color bleeding during the cycle. After the cycle, the clothes are said to be dried as well, so you won’t have to worry about throwing your laundry into a separate machine.

During a demo at CES 2025, our team on the floor saw the washer in action, and seemed impressed by how quickly and accurately it recognized clothes placed in the washer. When the cycle starts, a stain indicator and schedule also appear showing where the washer is in the cycle, and it will adjust the amount of detergent and water used during the cycle based on what the clothes need.

When will these be available for purchase?

Tenet’s AI Laundry is expected to launch in the US by the end of 2025, but pricing has not yet been revealed.
