Israel says it has found a corpse of Hamas military leader Muhammad Sinwar

The Israeli army said it had developed and identified the body of Muhammad Sinwar, the military leader of the Palestinian Armed Group in Gaza.

The Israeli Defense Forces said on Sunday that his body was discovered in a tunnel under the European Hospital in the southern city of Khan Yunis.

He said he had been verified by the identity of the body through DNA tests – although Hamas has not publicly confirmed his death.

Sinwar, 49, was killed in an air strike on May 13, which the Hamas Civil Defense Agency killed 28 people and wounded dozens.

He added, “Many of the elements belonging to Sinwar and Saturday, in addition to additional intelligence results that have been transferred for further investigation.”

The Israeli Defense Army said that other bodies were found, which were looking to identify it.

On Sunday, the Israeli Defense Army took a small group of foreign journalists to Gaza to Khan Yunis to show them the tunnel.

It also posted a video of the tunnel entrance, which is located in front of the European Hospital. The shots show a long underground corridor that leads to several rooms.

Israeli defense spokesman Brej Jin Evi Defirin said that in one of the rooms they found the body of Sinwar.

“This is another example of the satirical use by Hamas, using civilians as human shields, using civil infrastructure and hospitals, over and over again,” he said.

Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of using hospitals as places to hide weapons and leadership centers, which the group denies.

The Israeli Defense Army installed the siege and attacks on hospitals in Gaza, or ordered to evacuate, leaving the region’s health regime about to collapse.

Such attacks have caused widespread international anxiety, as many hospitals and medical facilities were developed – and the lives of patients and employees were at risk.

In a statement after an Israeli strike at Al -Ahly Hospital in April, United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres expressed his deep warning and announced that, under international humanitarian law, he must respect “wounded, patients, medical employees and medical facilities, including hospitals,”.

Hospital staff in Gaza has repeatedly denied that Hamas used their facilities as a rule.

The Israeli Defense Army will refer to these recent shots as a justification for its demands and military strategy.

As with a lot in Gaza, however, complete independent verification is not possible.

Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the unprecedented cross -border attack on October 7, 2023, where about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken into account.

At least 54,880 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health in the region.

Renewed fighting comes in Gaza after the collapse of the ceasefire and hostage deal a few months ago.

Since then, Israel has re -aimed to destroy Hamas and restore hostages, of whom 54 are still in captivity and 23 are still alive.

Mohamed Sinwar joined Hamas shortly after his founding in the late eighties and became a member of the group’s military wing, the brigades, the share of Al -Qassam.

He rose through the ranks and by 2005 he was the leader of the Khan Yunis Brigade.

He stated that Sinwar was close to the last of the former military chiefs in Hamas, Mohamed Dave, and participated in planning the October 7 attack.

His brother and predecessor Yahya Sinwar – who is believed to be one of the masterminds behind the October 7 attack – was killed by Israeli forces last October.
