The new Lebanese president’s statements come after the Secretary-General of the United Nations called on Israel to end its “occupation” of southern Lebanon.

The new Lebanese president called on Israel to withdraw from the south of his country by the January 26 deadline agreed upon in the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah last year, during his meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations who is visiting the war-torn country.

The continuation of Israeli violations on land and in the air, especially in terms of bombing homes and destroying border villages, completely contradicts what was stated in the ceasefire agreement and is considered a continuation of the violation of Lebanese sovereignty and the will of the international community. President Joseph Aoun’s office said on Saturday after his meeting with Antonio Guterres in Beirut.

Guterres said he would “do everything possible” to ensure the “safe” withdrawal of forces within the January 26 deadline set by the agreement reached on November 27.

Guterres said that a “more hopeful future” awaits Lebanon under Aoun’s leadership, in which the country can become stable and a center in the Middle East.

Aoun was chosen in January after an agreement between Lebanon’s political parties ended a two-year power vacuum that further destabilized the country as it faced Israeli attacks and a turbulent economy.

The message that Guterres sent in Lebanon was a message of support for the new president New Prime Minister Nawaf SalamAl Jazeera’s Zeina Khader said in a report from Beirut.

“What Guterres is saying is that the international community will stand by them and help them in their recovery efforts. Lebanon has had a difficult few years. The economy has almost collapsed, the country is on the verge of bankruptcy, there is a financial crisis, and the currency has lost a lot of its value.”

As part of the ceasefire, Hezbollah is supposed to withdraw beyond the Litani River, which lies about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the border with Israel, and dismantle any remaining military infrastructure.

UN peacekeepers have found more than 100 weapons caches belonging to Hezbollah or other armed groups in southern Lebanon, Guterres said on Friday, calling on Israel to stop its “occupation” of the region.

The Lebanese army is gradually spreading to other areas in the south along with United Nations peacekeeping forces, with Israeli military forces gradually withdrawing.
