Is Penguin teasing the Court of Owls for Batman 2?

One reason The Court Of Owls might appeal to Reeves is the opportunity to make a scarier Batman movie, but it doesn’t clash with the tone of the first film. It’s easy to compare the court to “Eyes Wide Shut,” a movie that showed how terrifying groups of people wearing masks can be. The maze sequence in “Court of Owls” shows Batman completely overpowered, to the point of causing him to imagine the members of the court as literal bird demons. To me, Batman embodies unbreakable calm and controlled rage, and seeing him so helpless sends chills crawling up your spine.

The vibe of “The Court of Owls” comes about because Snyder was a horror writer at the time. His comic was his breakthrough “American Vampire” (co-written with Stephen King himself)It was his first book after Batman. The seven-issue miniseries is “cut” (Co-written by Scott Taft, drawn by Attila Futaki.) Set in the American West during 1916, the story focuses on two fugitives who are targeted and groomed by a cannibalistic serial killer. It’s a story like “The Night of the Hunter” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” and it’s every bit as scary as those movies.

However, “Batman” turned Snyder into one of DC’s golden boys and he has never given up on superheroes since. These days, he writes The “Ultimate Batman” re-imagined With artist Nick Dragotta. In Snyder’s original run on Batman, you can trace his development; Each successive story feels less like a horror story and more like a superhero saga.

“Death of the Family” is one of the most horrific Joker stories ever and verges on the claustrophobia and dread of “The Court of Owls.” Then “Zero Year” shifts strongly into more adventure and action; The color palette of the comics has also gotten brighter, with plenty of cheerful pink-purple backgrounds.

However, there are still some aspects of horror in “Zero Year”. Notably, Snyder reimagined early Batman villain Doctor Death as suffering from bone mutations and resulting body horror.

When you get to “Superheavy” (about Jim Gordon walking around in Batman’s mecha armor), it’s clear that the writers have chosen the brighter parts of “Zero Year.” Many of Snyder’s more recent creations, e.g “The Batman Who Laughs” “Mad Max” riff “Nocterra” (drawn by Tony Daniel), the aforementioned “ultimate Batman,” seems designed to be cool, exciting and extreme, but not as scary as his previous comics were.
