Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has reacted to reports of a tussle in the dressing room after the team’s loss in the fourth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. Irfan Pathan criticized the leaking of locker room issues, expressing his disagreement with announcing such internal matters.

Reports emerged of internal tensions within the Indian dressing room on New Year’s Day. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was furious with the team’s performance, especially after the second-half collapse. Gambhir expressed his frustration, telling the players “bahut ho gaya” (I’ve had enough).

According to The Indian Express, Gambhir criticized the players for prioritizing their “natural game” instead of adapting to the situation. The report added that it did not name any specific individual. Having given the team freedom over the past six months, Gambhir has reportedly announced a tougher approach.

The Team India coach warned that players unwilling to follow his strategies could risk being dropped from the team. The report also mentioned disagreements between selectors Gambhir and BCCI, as well as with captain Rohit Sharma, adding to the brewing tensions.

What happens in the locker room… – Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan shared a cryptic message on his social media account regarding recent reports of the team’s internal issues leaking. Pathan said that what happens in the locker room should stay in the locker room.

“What happens in the locker room, should stay in the locker room!”, Irfan Pathan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Shrivats Goswami and WV Raman criticized leaking of dressing room discussions. Goswami condemned the act and called it unacceptable. Raman wondered how internal conversations were leaked to the media, and stressed the importance of allowing players to focus on their jobs during this crucial period.

“How did the locker room conversation get leaked to the media? That doesn’t exist!” Goswami wrote.

“#Teamindia has the opportunity to draw #BGT. So, they should be allowed to continue with their jobs. This is not the time to quell selective leaks and fan the fire. My humble view,” added Raman, who was interviewed for the India coach’s job that year, and who eventually went on to To Gambir.

Raman added: “The subtle manipulation of blaming the selectors for unfavorable results has begun! That is, assuming the reports are to be believed..”

India’s defeat to Australia in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne has dented their World Test Championship (WTC) hopes. To remain in contention, India must win the Sydney Test. However, their chances will still depend on Australia’s performance in the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Winning the Australian Test there would doom India’s prospects. A loss or draw in Sydney also means ceding the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India has held for 10 years, with their last defeat in the series coming on the 2014-15 tour of Australia.
