Iran said it had executed a man convicted of spying the Israeli intelligence agency, accusing him of engaging in sabotage.

The death penalty was carried out early on Wednesday against Mohsen Lanjarnechin, an Iranian citizen. The News Agency, Mizan, which belongs to the Iranian judicial authority, said that it was “a large spy that provides logistical support for multiple seasonal operations in Iran.” No details were provided against his background.

The execution comes at a decisive moment in Iran, with the Islamic Republic in the midst of talks on its nuclear program with the administration of US President Donald Trump.

The United States is seeking to impose restrictions to ensure that Tehran cannot reach a nuclear weapon in exchange for lifting severe sanctions that led to the suffocation of the Islamic Republic’s economy.

The United States and Israel threatened military strikes on Iran if the talks collapsed. There is increasing concern in Tehran that Iranian citizens who have “infiltrated” the security, military and covered institutions in the country can help Israel in this.

Mezan said that Langarnach was “in close cooperation with the major Mossad officers and met them in Georgia and Nepal.”

Araghchi also accused Israel of seeking “diplomacy’s exit” by “attempting to sabotage and assassination designed to stir a legitimate response,” as he wrote at X last week.

A massive explosion and fire in a port in southern Iran on Saturday just as Tehran and Washington were carrying a third round of nuclear talks in Amman.

Iran has not yet issued an official report on the issue of the explosion, which killed at least 70 people and wounded more than 1,200 people in the port of Shahid Rajai in Bandar Abbas.

Early speculation on social media hinted that the Israeli could be involved, but not the Iranians or Israeli officials suggested that the explosion was the result of an attack.

The Iranian Minister of Interior, Estandar Momaini, blamed “the lack of safety and neglect reserves”, while Ibrahim Rizai, a spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Relations Committee of Parliament, said that there is no evidence of “foreign sabotage or involvement” in the explosion.
