According to the officials familiar with the matter, India and the United States are working in discussions for more customs tariff discounts, with the aim of enhancing bilateral trade. “India may reduce import duties on Harley Davidson bikes, borbon whiskey and wine in California,” one of the sources.

This step would build on previous fees discounts. Harley-Davidson’s import tariff has decreased from 50 % to 40 %, while Bourbon Whisky witnessed a reduction from 150 % to 100 %.

The talks are also expected to include discussions on the expansion of US exports to the pharmaceutical and chemical products of India, a sector that has witnessed volatile trade flows over the past few years.

India’s imports of pharmaceutical products from the United States increased significantly – by 78.8 % – from 226,728.33 euros in 2020-21 to 405317.35 kh in 2021-22. However, this was followed by a decrease of 27.5 % in 2022-23, with imports to 293,642.57 kh. In 2023-24, imports rose again by 10.8 %, reaching 325500.17 dollars.
