The cultural heritage police in Italy said on Tuesday that an ancient Romanian mosaic depicting a naked couple had returned to Pompeii more than 80 years after being stolen by a Nazi officer during World War II.
The police said in a statement that the intimate artwork, which includes a man who in bed with his female partner stands in front of him, was returned by Germany after a diplomatic effort.

It was taken from the surrounding area, near Napoli, during the war by the commander of the German Nazi army appointed for military logistical services in Italy.

The German officer gave the piece to a civilian, kept it until his death. His heirs, who realized his origin, called the Italian authorities to arrange their return.
Gabriel Zoth Zrothle, the German director in Pompei’s ancient park, described the mosaic as part of a cultural turning point where the daily intimate relationship has become a subject in Roman art, rather than heroic myths in previous centuries.

“Here we see a new topic, home love routine,” he said, noting that the expression of the personality of males “seems to feel bored a little.”
The mosaic will now be displayed in Pompeii, along with hundreds of other elements and archaeological remains at the location of the old city destroyed by the Fisvius Mountain in 79 m.
