The US National Hurricane Center said that Hurricane Priscilla approached Category 3 on Tuesday in the Pacific Ocean as a new tropical storm formed and then strengthened in the Atlantic Ocean.
Off the west coast of Mexico, Priscilla was rotating with maximum sustained winds of about 110 mph (175 kph) and moving west-northwest at 9 mph (15 kph). On Tuesday afternoon, its center was about 330 miles (525 kilometers) west of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico, and about 215 miles (345 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, forecasters said.
On Tuesday, the hurricane’s outer bands were already extending across the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.
Meanwhile, in the Atlantic Ocean, Tropical Storm Jerry formed on Tuesday with maximum sustained winds rising to 50 mph (85 kph) by the afternoon. Its center was about 1,190 miles (1,920 km) east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands as it traveled to the west at 23 mph (37 km/h).
Forecasters said Jerry was expected to turn into a hurricane in another day or two. On Thursday, Jerry’s waves are expected to reach the Leeward Islands, with the core of the storm moving near or north of the northern Leeward Islands late Thursday and Friday.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Barthelemy, St. Maarten and St. Maarten.

In the Pacific Ocean, a tropical storm watch was in place for Baja California Sur from Cabo San Lucas to Cabo San Lazaro due to Hurricane Priscilla.
On Monday evening, the Baja California Sur state government announced the cancellation of classes in all educational centers starting Tuesday in Los Cabos and La Paz as a precautionary measure. It also established dozens of shelters in Los Cabos for people living in at-risk areas.
Parts of southwestern Mexico could receive up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain from Priscilla through Wednesday, creating a risk of flash flooding in Michoacán and Colima states, forecasters said.
The hurricane center said Priscilla was expected to weaken starting Wednesday. A major hurricane is defined as a Category 3 or higher hurricane with wind speeds of at least 111 mph (180 kph).
Waves from Priscilla were reaching the coast of Mexico. Meteorologists said life-threatening rip currents and rip currents were likely.
In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Octave was weakening about 780 miles (1,260 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. It had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 km/h) and was moving east-southeast at 8 mph (11 km/h).
