How the murderer Joel Cauchy retreated through cracks

For many, Saturday days are something we look forward to – comfortable times, and enjoy it with family and friends. But Elizabeth Young “fears” them. It is a weekly reminder of the killing of her violent daughter Jade in Westfield Bondi Junction.

“In the beautiful afternoon, to know that your daughter had died, she was stabbed in broad daylight, she was killed among the colleagues of reassuring shoppers … (when she was) she was living, breathing, just an hour ago … They are things from nightmares, from the parallel universe,” Elizabeth said to investigate mass killing this week.

“At the moment (the attacker) fell on this knife in the jade, our normal life was destroyed.”

Her pain was repeated by other victims’ families who gave emotional testimonies on the last day of the coronary investigation for five weeks in deadly stab wounds on April 13 last year.

The investigation sought to understand how a 40 -year -old Queensland man with a long history of mental illness managed to walk at the famous Sydney shopping center on Saturday afternoon and kill six people, 10 others, including a nine -month -old child.

The court heard hours of evidence of dozens of witnesses – doctors, survivors, families of the victims and the police – in an attempt to find out how, or if, Australia can prevent such a tragedy again.

“It seems to me that my daughter and five others were killed by the cumulative failures of the numbers of people in a whole series of supernatural systems,” Elizabeth told the NSW.

It was a moderate day after the first day of school holidays – when Joel Cauchy entered the sprawling shopping center, just minutes from the most famous Australia beach.

Immediately before 15:33 local time (GMT), Cauchi took a 30 cm knife from his bag and stabbed to death his first victim, Dawn Singleton 25 years old.

Within three minutes, the murderer attacked five others – Yixuan Cheng, 27; Jade Young, 47, Ashlee Good, 38; Taher, 30; Pikria Darchia, 55, Cauchi has also wounded 10 others including the baby’s daughter’s daughter.

At 15:38, five minutes after the start of his rampage, Kawcci was killed by police officer Amy Scott, who was in service nearby and arrived at the center about a minute ago.

The media also reported the killings, Kushi’s parents realized their son on television and contacted the police to alert them about his decades struggle with serious mental health problems.

The Jade Young family also faced pictures of her on TV, describing to investigate the horror of seeing the video that showed her “his body he is working on.” Likewise, Julie Sentelton, whose daughter was killed at dawn while standing in a bakery line, she heard her daughter called a victim on the radio before her body was officially identified and informed their other relatives.

The scenes in Bondi sent shock waves across the country, where mass killing was rare, and pushed a rush of anger and fear of women in particular. All of the 16 victims were females, including five of the six people who died.

The main focus on the investigation was to scrutinize the multiple interactions that Cauchi had with police and mental health specialists in the months and years before the attacks.

The investigation heard that Cauchy was one day a bright young man with a promising life in front of him. His family says he was a talented student, and he enrolled in a private school in a scholarship before he topped his classroom.

At the age of seventeen, in 2001, Kawcci was diagnosed with schizophrenia and soon began taking the medicine for his condition.

After a decade of his administration in the public health system, Cauchi began regular sessions with psychiatrist Dr. Andrea Borus Lavak in his hometown of Tuumba in 2012.

In 2015, he complained about the side effects of the drugs, so Dr. Borus-Facak began gradually reducing the dose of Clozapin-the user of the treatment of the treatment-resistant personality-after asking a second opinion from another psychiatrist, listened to the investigation.

She fully destroyed him from Clozapin in 2018, and Kauchi also stopped taking the drug to treat obsessive -compulsive disorder the following year.

In 2019, for the first time in about 15 years, Cauchi was no longer on antipsychotic drugs. Dr. Borus Lavak did not ask any second opinion about stopping the medicine completely.

The investigation heard from the medical professionals who said that in most cases, patients who start from antipsychotic drugs move to another, instead of completely stopping treatment.

Within months, Cauchi’s mother contacted his psychological doctor with concerns about her son’s mental state after finding notes that it was believed to be “under demonic control.” Almost at the same time, Cauchi developed what Dr. Borus Lavak said that the investigation was a “mandatory interest in porn”. She wrote a prescription, but she told the investigation that it was up to Cauchy to report whether he would start taking the medicine again.

In 2020, Cauchi left his family’s house, moved to Brisbane and stopped seeing Dr. Borus Lavak.

At this time, nearly two decades of treatment, Cauchi did not have a regular psychiatrist, who had no medications to treat schizophrenia and had no family living near.

The investigation heard that he began searching for a weapon license, and calling three Brisbane doctors to obtain a medical certificate to support his request. Either they did not ask to reach his medical file or did not give them Dr. Borus Lavak in full history, who said that if they need more information, they may ask that. The third doctor Kushi gave the statement after him, but he did not apply for a weapon, the court was informed.

Meanwhile, Cauchi was increasingly connected to the police. After moving to Brisbane, it was withdrawn more than three times to drive wrongly. In 2021, the officers were summoned to the Cauchi unit in Brisbane after the residents heard a man screaming and hitting the voices.

In 2022, the Cauchi police were informed after contacting the girl’s school to ask whether he could come and watch students swim and play sports. The officers tried to contact Cauchi, but they were unable to reach it.

In January 2023, Cauchy returned with his parents in Tuumba and called the police to complain that his father stole his group of “curable knives”. At this time, his mother raised concerns with the officers, saying that he should return to the medicine.

The authorities cannot detain people for reasons related to mental health unless they are a risk to themselves, and since the officers evaluated Kuchi did not fulfill this description, they left, listened to the court.

After the summons, one of the attending police officers sent an email to the mental health coordinator of the internal police, asking them to follow Cauchi. However, the email was overlooked due to employee deficiency, the investigation was said.

After months, the police in Sydney found that Cauchi is sleeping near a road after being called by a passer -by.

By 2024, Kochi’s mental health deteriorated, he was homeless, and was isolated from his family.

The investigation closely considered the treatment of Kochi’s mental health in Queensland, with a committee of five psychiatrists charged with reviewing it.

They found that Dr. Borus Lavak had lost opportunities to return him to anti -psychotic drugs, a member of the committee saying that she was “not taken seriously” fears of Kushi’s mother in late 2019.

The committee also provided evidence in the investigation that Cauchi was “Florian M terms” – in the active part of a psychotic ring – when he entered the shopping center.

Upon interrogation by the lawyer who helps the criminal investigating judge, Dr. Borus Lavak confirmed: “I did not fail to care for Joel.”

She had earlier told the investigation that she believed that Cauchy was not psychotic during the attack and that the drug would not prevent the tragedy.

Dr. Borus Lavak said the attacks may have been “because of his sexual frustration, pornography and hatred towards women.”

But the next day, she withdrew this evidence, saying that it was simply “guessing” and she was not in a situation that allowed her to assess the mental state of Kochi, and has not treated him since 2019.

However, the investigation achieves whether Cauchi is targeting specific individuals or groups.

For Peter Young, the brother of the jade, the answer seemed clear. He told the investigation newspaper: “Feed him frustrating from not finding a” nice “marriage” for marriage, “a quick hunting found 16 victims, 14 of whom are women.”

New South Wales Police Commissioner in the days after the attack said it was “clear” that the detectives focus on women.

However, during the investigation, Andrew Paul Marx of the killing squad said he did not believe that there was evidence that Kawchi had targeted women specifically.

The investigation also heard a number of failures or near errors in the way security, police, paramedics, and the media responded to the attack.

It was said that the pressures of employment and training for the security presenter mean that the control room operator at the center “is not commensurate with this role. The moment Kushi stabbed his first victim, the room was not observed because it was in a toilet break.

Security goalkeeper Farraz Taher, the only victim of stabbing, was working on his first day at work when he was killing as he was trying to stop Kalai, and asked questions about the forces and protection granted to workers like him.

His brother, Mahfar, told the investigation newspaper to what extent he died in parallel “honor as a hero” and also admitted that Cauchy’s parents lost their son: “We know that this tragedy is not their mistake.”

The contractor responsible for security at the shopping center has since modernized training and policies, in addition to providing resistant jackets to the guards.

Many families criticized media coverage in the wake of the attack, and they told the investigation that they were hoping that the industry would reflect on how to report sensitive stories so that they are not affected by the influence of the affected.

After weeks of evidence, the investigation was postponed on Thursday, with the governor of the state of New South Wales Teresa Osoulvan, its recommendations by the end of the year.

At the beginning of the investigation, Osolivan said that listening sessions were not about who was blaming the attacks, but rather “determining the possible opportunities for reform or improvement to enable these events to avoid them in the future.”

“I want families to know their loved ones in this process.”

Nevertheless, for the court, Elizabeth Young told her, “Nothing Good” of this investigation.

She said: “In 74 years, I lost my way in life.”

But she said that the action needed by the country he was taking already was clear to her.

“My daughter was killed by chronic schizophrenia … who was in possession of killing knives.
