How Peter Daton lost his heart

Over the past three years, when the peers of the former Liberal Party leader in Australia, Peter Daton, have been interrogated by his disagreement, often declaring his celebrity position in the north.

“Peter is one of us … he is very popular in Queensland,” said the leader of the liberal coalition partner, earlier this year.

But on the election night, it was the state of Datton that the Labor Party achieved its victory in the elections, as it overthrew the red collapse of the veteran deputy from his seat in Dixon.

While the votes are still calculated, the Labor Party can capture the largest number of voters in Queensland as it was in all other states and lands combined.

This is thanks to, in part, to a new bloc of young voters and women who are disappointed by the coalition, and attributes the confirmation of the party to the “Dateon influence”.

While the 65 -year -old elite was the Sao coalition, whose last name did not share it, she places it frankly: “This is the place he knows (Dutton) from … people and do not like him.”

The Mauriton Bay area is supposed to be about an hour north of Brisbane, Dateon Hartland. Before the Australian federal elections on May 3, the three seats here were controlled by liberalism – although only young threads, with Dutton’s voters in Dixon in the narrowest in the state.

The Dutton family has deep roots here, as dairy grandparents settled in agriculture in the region in the 1960s.

When Parliament entered for the first time 24 years ago, the region was made up of urban pockets and industrial property surrounded by areas of semi -rural land. Not the capital or rural, is how the former police officer described it in his speech before marriage as a deputy.

Now BrisBane is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, and these external northern suburbs are one of the main places that pressure people. Residential development exploded, and more families, priced from the city near the city, have moved to Mauriton Bay.

The “quiet Australian” Daton said that Dateon would offer him elections, and the external external neighborhoods were like this at the heart of the coalition strategy.

The medium family in Mauriton Bay earns less than both the state and the national average, as many of them depend on the health, trade and hospitality sectors to work. The coalition was hoping to return to reduce fuel expenses, improve the ability to afford housing and support small companies would control voters interested in the cost of living.

Many Moreton Bay residents, like the Kenneth King campaign, also felt that Daton’s links in the area will give them a boost.

“Peter Daton has known for many years,” local Dixon told the BBC on the polling day. “He has always been a high character, serious about effective policies and a lot of sympathy for ordinary Australians.”

“He has great respect in society … people know him.”

Alisha, a swinging voter in the neighboring voters in Petri, who refused to give her title.

“I don’t know if he appeals to the daily person,” says 26 -year -old nurse. “He does not put himself in people’s shoes.”

Its voting has gone over the years to a group of parties from the right through the political spectrum – with the exception of the vegetables, as it laughs quickly.

“I am not sitting with any party. Be a Christian, this is what corresponds to a party to Qayyimi,” she says, adding that the future of her young children is the other main consideration.

These elections, and this means that its voting went to the current alliance, Luke Huraq, whom she personally knows from her church.

But while you pray for a miracle, with the final sounds are still calculated, they are not surprised to find Hurath on his way out.

She says that the Labor Party has made very clear campaigns in the region, but it tells the BBC that it was leading the image of Hourath and its leader on the advertising boards that hold on its mind.

“Unfortunately, I think this is what he did,” she says.

“Peter Dateon’s face was a huge shift – for me personally too.”

Sue, who lives in the same voters, is a general conservative voter in the polling fund, Soo says.

“I had a great frequency in that,” she says. “I don’t like the Albanians, and I think it is like, weak.

(But) Daton is an unattractive character … he believes he presents himself strong, but he presents himself as part of the fatwa. “

Ultimately, Soo also voted in favor of Hurath – who is similarly convinced, Daton lost the seat.

“I spoke to a few friends … some have changed their voices because of Peter Daton,” she says. “People, right or wrong, Datton align with Trump. This is very negative for anyone sane.”

Many ingredients that BBC spoke that they do not want the American style policy here.

Drew Cutler grew up at the Longman headquarters, which shares the border with Dickson and Petrie- and although he no longer lived in the region, the 28-year-old has invested in the result that returned to the work campaign.

It was won by MP coalition Terry Young on the sidelines of 3 % last elections, and it is now very close to communication.

Mr. Cutler, a former employee of the Labor Party, believes that the Labor Party has made very strong local campaigns. But he also believes that Datton’s policy is turning and an expected instability aura was strong.

This included the announcement, then walk, reduce jobs in public service and plans to finish the arrangements from home, in addition to a volatile position on electric vehicle taxes.

Mr. Katler says that such optics were particularly harmful, when it contradicts the decisive image of Datton.

Returning to Dixon, Rick – a retired member and a new liberal party member – said on the election night that he also felt confused playing a role in defeating the party, especially among the youth.

But April, 30, who did not offer her last name, says Dutton was the one who did not understand.

She cannot remember a time when he was not in power in Dixon, and he feels that over time he has lost his contact with his voters and the country on a broader scale.

For her, the last straw was an effective role in defeating the voice to the referendum of parliament, which sought to recognize people from the indigenous strace and the inhabitants of Torres in the constitution and at the same time the establishment of a parliamentary advisory body for them.

“I think it has caused a lot of harm to many minority groups through the scale,” she says.

For others in the voters, the last straw was watching Datton flying into a fundraising campaign in Sydney, where the region in Dixon was exposed and around the Hurricane Alfred in February.

April did not feel that the Labor Party’s offer was also strong, especially in climate work, so a campaign by Elie Smith decided to “TEAL” independent in the seat.

The disappointment of hope – border embarrassment – that Datton was from her local region to crystallize: “I felt that it was an obligation … our responsibility to get out of it.”

Ultimately, the coalition lost at least six seats in front of the Queensland Labor Party – all of them bar in Brisbane. Although they are making a few voices in Longman with continued counting, they can still lose this as well.

Frank Malls says Queensland has long been a political wilderness, and she often finds herself in the “lights” in the federal elections.

The University of Queensland’s policy records indicate that the state helped to achieve Kevin Rudd’s victory in the historic elections in 2007 and Scott Morrison won a “miracle” in 2019. It was surprised by the last elections, as it voted a record number of people across the country for the benefit of the candidates outside the main parties, Queensland, Qinsland surprised the nation by providing three seats – nothing.

Dr. Malls says that there are some factors that make the state more “volatile” and may transfer it.

First, it is the only state or region, with the exception of Tasmania Island, where more than half of the population lives outside the capital of Brisbane.

“We are always talking about Queensland in elections, one in the southeastern corner, then the rest – they often get very different patterns.”

Dr. Malls says that there is also more political fragmentation in the state, which deals with the preferential voting system in Australia that can make political equations here more strict and more difficult or predictable orientations.

But Doton may have had a opposite impact on the Green Party, which lost at least two of the three seats he acquired in Brisbane in 2022. It seems that their party leader, Adam Bandt, was defeated in Melbourne, a 15 -year -old voter.

“Perhaps in despair, Dutton was attracted towards cultural war issues, and there is a kind of Trump’s subject, if you want, and this has been punished,” says Dr. Malls. “But also the vegetables … who may have been seen as at the other end of that screaming match, did not succeed well.”

Dr. Malls also believes that despair to keep Dutton has seen some former Greens voters giving priority to work workers this time – although he indicates more independents in Teal Teal, who seems to have highlighted this trend.

However, he does not see the result in Queensland as a grain of love. The state was still the only judicial jurisdiction in Australia, as there were more preferential voices of the alliance than work.

“There must be enough swing towards a party, but often it is preferable to actually tend to the line,” he says.

“This is more than a liberal loss.”

For many coalition voters, this loss is deeply perceived. Rick describes him as a “real defeat.”
