Shocking scenes unfolded during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 match between the Sri Lanka women’s national cricket team captained by Chamari Athapathu and the women’s national cricket team captained by Nat Siever Brandt.
Sri Lanka Women’s National Cricket Team captain Chamari Athapathu was taken off the field after being injured at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, October 11.

The skipper, Nat Sciver-Brunt, led from the front and played a stunning knock of 117. However, she did not receive good support from the other batsmen who fell for low scores.
Chasing the target, Sri Lanka got off to a terrible start as their captain and best batsman Chamari Athapathu went down with an injury in the sixth over.
On the third ball of the over, Shamari Athapathu swept a single. After that, she fell to the ground and appeared to be in severe pain. The replay also showed that she was limping while taking that song.
Team Physio immediately came in the middle and did some stretching exercises, and as Athapathu writhed in pain, she was stretched off the field. Later, SLC issued a statement, saying the mixture was fine.
βShamari Athapathu is currently undergoing treatment for a spasm in her right leg that she sustained while batting during the ongoing match between Sri Lanka and England,β SLC said in an official media statement.

Very confident about my bowling unit – Chamari Athapathu
Earlier, the Sri Lankan women won the toss and chose to field first in the match. Chamari Athapathu said they have a lot of confidence in the bowling unit which is very experienced. She said:
“I want to bowl first. Very confident in my bowling unit. We have a good experienced bowling unit. Conditions are good for spin as well. If we restrict it to 200-240, it will be good. One change for us. We have struggled with our batting in the middle overs. We have been working on it. A privilege for the entire team to play at home.”
Meanwhile, England Women’s captain Nat Sciver-Brandt expressed confidence in her team’s ability to deliver a good performance while batting first against Sri Lanka. She said:
“I was going to bat, very happy with that. I think it’s going to be good (the pitch). The idea was to bat first in the third game, and hopefully it will get slower throughout the day and the bowlers will get into the game. Same team. Great all-rounder for us and he balances the team well (Kapsi). A few recruits have come in and helped us in the nets (preparation against the left-armers). We’re certainly not going to take anything. Lightly. They have Some great players in their team and some great control with their shots down the middle.β
