After the United States said that the commercial deal with India would take time, New Delhi officially informed the World Trade Organization on May 12 of its plan to suspend commercial privileges on American goods of $ 1.91 billion.

This step is in response to Washington’s expansion to protect definitions on aluminum and steel imports, which India says global trade rules and harm its exports.

The signs of stress follow commercial negotiations that have already shown momentum. Both sides pointed to progress, but the recent US comments raised doubts about the pace and results of the talks.

India has also refused to ask President Trump to mediate the ceasefire with Pakistan, and analysts say it has deprived the lack of confidence between the two governments.

In the World Trade Organization file, India accused the United States of failing to comply with the rules of protection, overcome the required consultations, and to inflict economic exports to Indian exports.

The notification said: “The proposed comment for concessions or other obligations takes an increase in the definitions on the chosen products that arise in the United States.”

Unless they are resolved, the revenge definitions will apply to 30 days. India has left the option to review the list of targeted American products and targeted tariff rates, indicating a stable but fixed approach.

India estimates that the US measures affect its exports of aluminum, steel and derivatives of $ 7.6 billion, causing losses of $ 1.91 billion in additional duties.

This reflects the measures conducted by the European Union and Canada, which responded to the definitions of the Trump administration’s march on steel and aluminum by imposing reprisals on American goods.

India argues that US measures are inconsistent with the general agreement on definitions and trade (GATT) 1994 and the World Trade Organization agreement on guarantees, and says it will continue to exercise its right to suspend concessions until the settlement is reached.
