“And I’m not going to go through all of our accomplishments. We know what they are. But I will tell you that everyone here has a lot to be proud of, and our work is far from done,” Harris said. He said. “And as you all know me, because we have spent long hours, long days, months and years together, it is not in my nature to go quietly into the night.”
Harris is the first woman to participate in the decades-old tradition of signing on the stairs. The Vice President indicated that she had met with all those who signed the office, with the exception of Presidents Eisenhower and Truman.

As soon as Harris signed onto the desk, the crowd of current and former employees in attendance began chanting “MVP!”
“We have each taken a life and a calling that is about doing the work of serving others and doing so in a way that is fueled, yes, by ambition; yes, with an almost stubborn sense of not hearing no; and we know that we can make a difference,” Harris told her staff.

While Harris was participating in an ancient tradition, her journey to that point was anything but traditional.

After her landslide loss to President-elect Trump in November, Harris’ political future became uncertain. Some have speculated that she will run for governor of California in 2026, as Governor Gavin Newsom will not be able to run for a third term due to term limits. Others wonder if she will skip her gubernatorial bid and try again to run for president in 2028.
Harris has not spoken publicly about her future, making Thursday’s comment the first about what she might be planning next Trump takes office.
