Erling Haaland scored for the tenth successive match for club and country after twice missing a penalty kick in Norway’s World Cup qualifier against Israel.
The Manchester City striker scored twice as Norway took a 3-0 lead at half-time in a politically charged match at Oslo’s Ullevalstadion.
However, Haaland’s third-minute penalty was saved by Daniel Peretz before the scoring striker was given a second chance when the visitors’ goalkeeper was deemed to have gone out of his goal early.
But Peretz was equal to the comeback, diving to his left side to keep out the 25-year-old’s effort.
The Norwegian will not be denied for long. After Anan Khalili turned the ball into his own net in the 18th minute, Haaland scored nine minutes later, hitting Alexander Sorloth’s through ball with pinpoint accuracy.
Norway increased its lead after only 60 seconds when Aidan Nachmias scored the second own goal for Israel.
Haaland’s goal continues his impressive start to the season. Tottenham are the only team so far this season to be prevented from finding the back of the net when Thomas Frank’s side recorded a 2-0 win over City in August.
His electric form has helped take Norway within striking distance of the 2026 World Cup finals.
The win over Israel, coupled with Estonia’s unexpected win over Italy later, will confirm Norway’s place in next summer’s big event for the first time in 28 years.
