In the capital, Conakry, where the political campaign was banned on Friday and Saturday, people gathered at the polling stations early Sunday to cast their votes.

Ahmed Idris of Al -Jazeera from Conakry said that the government deployed security officers with a government statement that determines that “more than 40,000 security personnel have been deployed to provide security in these elections.”

Idris said: “People expect the referendum to lead to the approval of the draft constitution, which some people call it impressive and progressive.”

“However, people who oppose this referendum say that it will give legitimacy to the current military rule to participate in the elections. The transitional charter said, in fact, no member of the current military government will participate, but many people are afraid that the referendum will lead to a constitution that allows every member of this government to participate in (next).”

Critics closely monitor the referendum, for fear that this is the last attempt by the government to legitimize its rule in a continent, as it changed eight coups since 2023 in West and Central Africa, the political scene.

The referendum was also criticized as the seizure of power by Dumboya. He missed his government -led government by a deadline by returning the government to civil power after he seized power four years ago.
