As the Milwaukee Bucks prepare for the new NBA season, Giannis Antetokounmpo says he’s locked in, but there’s a problem.
Speaking on Wednesday, Antetokounmpo addressed recent headlines following reports that the Bucks held offseason trade talks with the New York Knicks regarding a potential move for the two-time MVP.
Although he said he had not read the report himself, the Greek forward reiterated that his main priority remains competing for championships – whether that continues in Milwaukee or elsewhere.
“I’ve said it many times: I want to be in a position where I can win,” Antetokounmpo said. “I believe in this team. I believe in my teammates. I’m here to lead this team wherever we can go. It’s definitely going to be tough. We’ll take it day by day, but I’m here. So all the extra stuff doesn’t matter.”
“I’ve connected with my teammates, I’ve connected with people that I respect and love, and that the minute I step onto this field or into this facility, I put on this jersey, the rest doesn’t matter. I’m limited by whatever I have in front of me. Now, if I change my mind in six or seven months, I think that’s human as well.”
Antetokounmpo recently missed the opener of training camp due to illness, but returned to the Bucks last weekend in Miami before their first preseason game on Sunday, in which he did not play. Milwaukee is scheduled to face the Detroit Pistons on Thursday at Fiserv Forum.
“I’m locked in,” Antetokounmpo added. “I’m locked in with this team. I’m locked in with these guys, this group, the coaching staff and myself.”
Looking back on the offseason, Giannis likened it to a period full of outside distractions and “temptations,” but noted that once camp starts, he silences the noise and dedicates himself to the game again.
“It’s a temptation. It starts when the season ends and until the season starts,” Antetokounmpo said. “There will be a lot of people who will approach me or approach my agent and say this is a possibility, this is a possibility… but at the end of the day, in the end, I will make a decision. And my decision today is that I am here and I am committed to this team.”
