George Russell revealed that Mercedes is holding a “big meeting” this week in an attempt to understand the team’s loss in form during the last few rounds of the Formula 1 2025 season.
The British began the General Personnel, where he claimed four platforms, where he finished in the first five places in both the first six races for this season.
The most prominent in the Mercedes campaign came when Russell won, and his colleague Kimi Antonelle ended on the platform in Canada in June, but the three races have since been “frightening”.
Russell ranked fifth in the Belgian Grand Prix race on Sunday, but he finished half a minute of dominance on McCares from Oscar Pacri and Wando Norris, and perhaps more than 15 seconds – approximately 15 seconds behind the battle for the third between Ferrari Charles Licerk and Red Bulls Max Versaben.
Russell said Sky SPORTS F1: “It was very frightening, to be honest.
“Because we tend to prefer cooler conditions. So we could not seek the weather better for us. But we had no pace recently. We needed to sit, all.
“We will hold a big meeting this week with all designers and engineers. To understand the kind of decisions we have taken in recent weeks or months. Why did we go back. Hoping of some improvements in Hungary.”
Mercedes has provided a series of promotions to W16 in the past two months, but Russell admits that the team has failed to extract performance from the new parts.
He added: “P5 might fill the true pace of the car, so I am at least happy because we got the possible maximum.
“We have made a clear change in the direction two months ago, and I think it was from that point we took a step back.
“Sometimes it takes some races to understand the real reasons for the lack of pace, but it is clear that we seem to need to return to what we have earlier this season.”
Does changing the front base explain Mercedes conflicts?
Andrew Chovlin, head of Mercedes engineering next to the track, admitted after the race in the spa that the team has struggled to balance his car since the introduction of a technical direction (TD) in the Spanish Grand Prix race, which is limited to the permissible amount of the front fold.
He said: “What we had earlier in the year was a car that was working well in every circle.
“We were generally fighting for the second row of the network, if not the front row. It may be correct for anyone that TD will not improve stability, but we have this wing on the car in Montreal and it was good.
“The truth is that others are able to balance their cars a little better. There is no doubt that there is a solution to us. We are only looking at all the steps that we took with the design of the car during the last issue of races.
“It is not only the front wing that has been changed, and I am sure that there is more than we can learn. This is what focuses on the next few races, in an attempt to determine the reason we get this entry problem.”
Mercedes has a little time to reflect her wealth before the second stage of consecutive Hungary this week before the summer vacation.
By confirming the “Great Meeting” reported on Monday, Chauvlin expressed his confidence that positive changes can be made to the field.
He added: “It is definitely possible to consider changing the sides of the car for the Bodapest.
“How deep is it will depend on the parts we have around us.
“There is a lot that we changed, so we have a meeting with drivers tomorrow to overcome what we have done throughout the year to try to make sure that our efforts focus on the right things and not just change things for that.”
