Gautam Gambhir strips Shubman Gill of the title of ‘Prince’ and hands it over to someone else

Team India celebrated coach Gautam Gambhir’s 44th birthday in style with a 2-0 Test series win over West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on October 14. After the win, Gambhir transferred the much-talked-about title of ‘Prince’ from Shubman Gill to a legendary figure in Indian cricket.

Gambhir has represented India in 58 Tests, 147 ODIs and 37 T20Is. The left-handed opener has amassed over 9,000 international runs, including nine Test and eleven ODI centuries. He played match-winning innings in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, helping the team to two ICC titles.

Shubman Gill claimed his first Test series win as captain as India completed a 2-0 sweep of the West Indies, sealing a seven-wicket win in the second match in Delhi.

Gill led from the front with an unbeaten century in the first innings, his highest Test score on Indian soil. The young batsman will next head to Australia for the ODI series, which will be his first stint as India’s limited-overs captain.

Gautam Gambhir faces his next challenge as India’s head coach with a short tenure after the West Indies series. The team will tour Australia for three ODIs and five T20Is starting October 19. Notably, the series will also mark Shubman Gill’s first stint as India’s ODI captain.

India have excelled in white-ball cricket under Gambhir’s guidance, having already won the Asia Cup and Champions Trophy. However, the upcoming round is expected to be a tougher test given Australia’s home advantage and difficult conditions.

Since Gambhir took charge, India have maintained an impressive record, winning nine of their 12 ODIs and 20 of their 22 T20I matches, showing the team’s strong form and consistency across formats.
