Florence Pugh talks about the “difficult” realities of being a young woman in Hollywood

The actress discussed how the Me Too movement shaped her need to stand up for herself and prioritize mental health.

During an appearance on the “Reign With Josh Smith” radio show, Pugh spoke about her struggles as a young woman in Hollywood.

The 29-year-old actress, who made her screen debut in 2014 drama “The Falling” at the age of 18 and has since risen to prominence as one of the industry’s most sought-after stars, reflected on how she got into the world of entertainment. It coincided with the emergence of the “Me Too” movement.

She explained that this timing reinforced the importance of defending herself.

“It’s very difficult. It’s also stressful. It’s really tiring,” Pugh shared, according to Daily Mail. “Young women in this industry have a lot to fight for and protect and defend and then scream for. It’s really hard. It’s an experience and it makes you demand yourself. It makes you have to discover yourself.”

Pugh added that she has learned to prioritize her well-being, saying: “Now I just have to take care of myself, take care of my heart and that’s who I am. I wouldn’t change anything. I’m really proud of the things I’ve stood for.”

Considering the progress that has been made for women in the industry, Pugh acknowledged the improvements but stressed the continued need to fight for justice and equality.

“We’re in a time that’s definitely getting better for women, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to keep fighting for the things you think are right,” she noted.

The actress continued, “I’ve always been proud of the way I’ve stood up for myself, whether it’s on Instagram or in interviews. I’ve always been proud of the way I’m not afraid to speak up for myself.”

Pugh also revealed how important it is to prioritize her mental health, especially after taking on emotionally demanding roles.

Reflecting on her experience filming horror film Midsommar, the 29-year-old actress admitted that the role left her feeling drained, describing it as a form of self-inflicted stress.

“Protecting myself is something I had to learn how to do,” she said. “There were some roles where I gave too much, and I was broken for a long time after that.”

She continued: “Like I did in Midsommar, I definitely felt like I was doing myself a disservice in some way in the places I went. The nature of discovering these things is that you need to go, ‘Okay, okay I can.’ Don’t do that again because that was more “It’s necessary.”

Despite the losses, Pugh said she finds pride in her performance: “I also look at that performance, and I’m really proud of what I did, and I’m proud of what I got out of it. So I don’t do that.” We regret that.”

Pugh discussed her decision to shave her head for her role in We Live In Time, in which she plays a woman battling ovarian cancer alongside Andrew Garfield.

She added: “They would have biscuits and tea and they would all shave my mum’s hair and put it together. I added the collection because I wanted to keep my hair this time.”

During the chat, Pugh also revealed that working on “We Live In Time” was as emotionally intense for her and Garfield during filming as it is for the viewers watching the finished product.

She said that many of the scenes “really hit her heart.” However, she had to hold back tears to stay true to her character, Alamut, who remains a constant source of strength throughout the film.

“There were some things that would happen just because it was very emotional, and we were having an emotional conversation within the scene, and (director) John (Crawley) would come up and say, ‘No, no, no,'” Pugh recounted. “Florence, you can’t cry. here”.

The actress continued: “I’ll say: What?! This is heartbreaking!” And he was like, ‘No, you’re the pillar of the family, and this is something that happens to him but not to you, so when it actually falls apart, hopefully it really hurts the soul.’
