(Reuters) -President Donald Trump said on Friday that he intends to double the customs tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 % of 25 %, starting from Wednesday, which increased pressure on global producers and deepening his trade war.

Here is a summary of the main commercial partners that will affect it.

steel:

Nearly a quarter of all the steel used in the United States, a quantity of Mexico neighbors, Canada or close allies in Asia and Europe such as Japan, South Korea and Germany.

While China is the largest producer and source in the world, it sends very little to the United States. The definitions imposed 25 % in 2018 closed most of the Chinese steel outside the market.

China has exported 508,000 tons of steel to the United States last year or 1.8 % of the total US steel imports.

Aluminum:

For aluminum, the United States relies heavily on imports. Almost half of all aluminum used in the United States is imported with the vast majority of Canada. At 3.2 million tons last year, Canadian imports were twice that in the next nine countries combined.

The largest sources of imports are the United Arab Emirates and China, at 347,034 and 222,872 metric tons, respectively.

American aluminum smelting industry is small according to international standards. The country’s total son -in -law was only 1.73 % of the global total, according to the American geological survey.
