An anonymous engineer has sparked a heated debate online by urging graduates from Tier 2 and Tier 3 colleges to leave India to escape discrimination at the workplace.
In a Reddit post, he claimed that IIT graduates often look down on graduates of lower-ranked institutions, creating an environment of bias and exclusion. “Dear caste 2/3 youth, if you want to live a respectable life, you have to leave India,” he wrote.
The engineer shared his personal experiences working alongside IIT graduates, recounting years of subtle and overt discrimination. “You’ll never get respect here because you’re from a second-tier college,” he said. According to him, IITians routinely rejected his contributions, marginalized him in meetings, and excluded him from social events. He alleged that they sabotaged his professional growth, especially during interactions with upper management regarding promotions or requests for leave.
Faced with years of such treatment, the engineer found a solution: leave India. He revealed that obtaining a master’s degree at one of the top five American universities significantly changed the way he was treated. “I have now been in the US for the past year and the way I am treated is completely different,” he wrote. While he admitted that prejudices of IITians still existed outside, he highlighted that the choice to avoid interacting with them was liberating.
The Reddit post sparked discussions on systemic biases in the workplace and pressures faced by graduates of non-IIT institutions. While many users supported his view, others questioned whether leaving the country was the only solution.
