Donald Trump said that European leaders will visit the United States on Monday or Tuesday to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.
The US President added that he would also speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin “soon”, in addition to noting that his administration was ready to move to a second stage of sanctions on Moscow.
Ukrainian President Foludmir Zelinski said the sanctions are the “correct idea” and urged European countries to stop buying Russian energy.
It comes at a time when Russia launched the largest air strike on Ukraine from the war so far, killing four and became the main government building in Ukraine in Kiev for the first time.
After the attack, during which Russia launched at least 810 drones and 13 missiles in Ukraine, Trump said it was “not satisfied with the entire situation.”
“Some European leaders come to our country on Monday or Tuesday individually,” Trump said. It was not clear to those who were Trump.
Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine since Trump and Putin held a summit in Alaska last month.
Speaking to ABC News, Zelensky said that the European partners who continue to buy Russian oil and gas are “not fair”.
He added: “We have to stop (buy) any kind of energy from Russia, and by the way, anything, that is, deals with Russia. We cannot have any deals if we want to stop them.”
Zelinski also welcomed Trump’s plans to impose a secondary tariff on countries that travele with Russia – aimed at thwarting Moscow’s ability to finance the war.
“I think the idea of setting a customs tariff for countries that continue to conclude with Russia, and I think this is the correct idea,” he said.
Russia has sold about 985 billion dollars (729 billion pounds) of oil and gas since it began to invade on a large scale for Ukraine in March 2022, according to the Center for the Center for Energy for Energy and Air Research and Air.
The largest buyers were China and India. The European Union has reduced significantly – but has not completely stopped – Russian energy purchases. In June, Brussels had made plans to end all purchases by 2027.
Last month, the United States imposed definitions 50 % on goods from India As a penalty to continue buying Russian oil. The Indian government said it will continue to follow the “best deal” to buy oil for the economic interests of its residents.
At a meeting in Beijing last week, Russia said it would increase Gas supply to China.
Zelensky’s intervention comes at a time when the Opec+ Group of oil producing, which includes Russia, once again agreed to increase production, a step that will put pressure on oil prices.
US Treasury Secretary, Scott Payette, told NBC’s Meet The Press that the United States was looking for more support from the European Union to impose a secondary tariff on countries that buy Russian oil.
“The European Union countries increase the sanctions and secondary definitions of countries that buy Russian oil,” the Russian economy will be in complete collapse, and President Putin will bring to the table. “
He added: “We are in a race now between the period in which the Ukrainian army can withstand, in exchange for the period in which the Russian economy can withstand.”
