European leaders said that they will join Ukrainian President Voludimir Zelinski at his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday.
Among those who travel the UK Prime Minister are Sir Kerr Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Layen and Secretary General of NATO Mark Retty.
This comes after Trump failed to reach an agreement on ending the war in Ukraine during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.
The US president has since said that he wanted to overcome the ceasefire insurance in Ukraine in favor of a permanent peace agreement.
A ceasefire in Ukraine was one of Trump’s basic demands before Putin’s interview, but then he posted on social media that “often does not withstand” and that it would be better to “go directly to the peace agreement.”
The reaction of European leaders was cautious to the results of the Trump Putin meeting, and in order not to criticize the trend change despite their long fire support.
According to Putin Trump, a peace offer requires withdrawal from Ukraine from the Donetsk region in Donbas, in exchange for Russia’s freezing of the front lines in Zaporesia and Jeruson.
Russia claims that Donabas, as Russian lands, control most of Luhansk and about 70 % of Donetsk. It also joined the Crimea illegally in 2014, eight years before its large -scale invasion of Ukraine.
The President of Ukraine has previously ruled out control of Donbas – composed of the Luhanssk and Donetsk regions – saying that it can be used as a starting point for future Russian attacks.
On Sunday, Trump’s Steve Wittakv’s special envoy said that Putin agreed in Alaska that the United States would provide Ukraine “strong security guarantees that I will describe as changing the game.”
He told Witkoff Cnn that Western Ukraine’s allies “reached an agreement that the United States and other European countries could provide an effective language similar to covering a security guarantee.”
Article 5 in NATO states that the attack on one member is an attack on everyone.
Putin opposes Ukraine’s accession to NATO, and Witkev said that this arrangement could be an alternative if “Ukrainians can live with that.”
Witkeov also said that Russia “made some concessions on the table” around the land.
He added that the Donetsk region constitutes an “important debate” – and is scheduled to happen tomorrow.
The BBC partner in the United States CBS was martyred with diplomatic sources as saying that European officials were concerned that Trump might try to pressure Zelinski to agree to the conditions discussed with Russia in Alaska.
Von der Lyen Zelensky met in Brussels on Sunday. At a press conference after that, von der Layen said that any peace deal should include security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe, and that international borders cannot be changed by force.
She said: “These are decisions made by Ukraine and Ukraine alone.” “These decisions should not be taken without Ukraine on the table.”
Zelinski repeated that the Ukrainian constitution makes it impossible to waive the lands of Russia and that the issue should be discussed only by Ukraine and Russia leaders at a triple summit.
Ukrainian leader repeated the need to stop fire before working quickly on the “final deal”.
The White House meeting on Monday will be the first for Zelensky since a hard public exchange in the Oval Office in February, when Trump told him to be more “grateful” for his American support and accused him of “gambling with World War III.”
Then Zelinski was asked to leave the White House.
He seemed to be reconciled with Trump in April, while the White House described him as a 15 -minute “very fruitful” meeting before attending the funeral of Pope Francis.
Ukraine also signed the metal deal that gave the United States a financial share in the country, and Kiev explains that they were ready to pay the price of US weapons.
But there will be concern in Kyiv and other European capitals after Trump Putin’s meeting on Friday.
The Russian president, who is facing a memorandum of arresting the International Criminal Court with the alleged war crimes in Ukraine, has retreated from his plane and the red carpet to be received warm by Trump, who later said they had a “great relationship.”
