European leaders hope initially after contacting with Trump before the Ukraine summit

European leaders seemed optimistic after holding a virtual meeting with Donald Trump on Wednesday, two days before his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

According to Trump, Trump told the Europeans that his goal at the top is to obtain a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev.

He also agreed that any regional issues had to be identified with the participation of Volodymyr Zelensky, and that security guarantees should be part of the deal, according to Emmanuel Macron of France.

Macron said that speaking to Trump allowed him to “clarify his intentions” and give the Europeans an opportunity to “express our expectations.”

Trump and Vice President JD Vance spoke to the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Finland and Poland, as well as European Union President Ursula von der Lynn and NATO President Mark Roti.

The Europeans were marginalized from the organized summit in Alaska, and their phone calls were today a recent attempt to preserve the interests of Ukraine and the continent’s security at the forefront of Trump’s mind.

To some extent, it seems to be working. On Wednesday evening, Trump classified the meeting “ten” and said that Russia will face “very severe” consequences unless its war in Ukraine stops.

On Wednesday morning, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexei Fadiv reported that Russia’s position has not changed since Putin’s place in June 2024.

At that time, Putin said that the ceasefire would start at the moment when the Ukrainian government withdrew from four parts partially operated by Russia – Donetsk, Luansk, Jeruson and Zaburisia. He also said that Ukraine would need to be officially surrendering in its efforts to join the NATO military alliance.

Zelensky said he is convinced that Russia will use any region allowed to keep it as a starting point for future invasions.

Meanwhile, on the front lines, Russia’s summer attack continues to pressure. In reference to the sudden progress of the Moscow forces near Dobubilia, in the besieged Donetsk region, Zelinski said that Putin pretends that the sanctions were not effective in destroying the Russian economy.

The Ukrainian president said: “Trump and our European allies told Putin to deceive them,” urging them to apply “more pressure” on Russia.

For his part, Trump seemed to admit that even when Putin meets face to face, he may not be able to stop killing civilians in Ukraine.
