DSA rejects the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and calls for resistance to the occupation

Democratic Socialists of America, the political party the New York City mayor hopes to join Zahran Mamdani The Hamas movement rejected the ceasefire that Israel announced with Hamas on Monday and called for more resistance to Israeli “apartheid and occupation” of the Gaza Strip.

The DSA issued the statement titled “Until Palestinian Liberation” on its website, declaring that they “have no illusions that Israel will respect any negotiated agreement that preserves Palestinian life or self-determination.” The statement did not mention the release of Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity, and accused Israel of “terrorizing” the Palestinian people and the Palestinian states in the region.

The movement wrote, “This will not end Israel’s attack on the Palestinian people or the theft and occupation of Palestinian lands. The conditional ceasefire agreement does not wash the hands of the ruling class.”

The statement continued, “The occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, eroding under illegal settlement expansion, continue to struggle under apartheid and violent Israeli occupation. Across the region, Israel terrorizes the peoples of Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Qatar, and Iran while exercising the implicit threat of nuclear engagement to impose its fascist and expansionist aspirations with violence.”

Mamdani’s own The statement on the ceasefire repeated allegations of “occupation and apartheid.” against Israel, Which led to swift criticism from both his opponents in the mayoral race and New York City officials.

“Today’s scenes for Israelis and Palestinians are very poignant: the release of Israeli hostages and the reunion of families after years of fear, uncertainty and torture; the first days in Gaza without sustained Israeli bombing of Palestinians as families return to the rubble and their loved ones are freed from detention,” Mamdani wrote in a statement on X.

He added: “We must work for a future built on justice, a future free of occupation and apartheid, and for a world in which every person can live in safety and dignity.”

New York City Councilwoman Ina Vernikoff, who is Jewish, attacked Mamdani shortly thereafter, calling his statement “word salad” and noting that there was no mention of Hamas or its crimes.

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running against Mamdani for mayor, noted how long it took the social Democratic candidate to address the ceasefire.

The exchange came as Mamdani’s wife, Rama Al-Dawaji, also found herself the target of criticism on Monday after she publicly mourned the death of a Palestinian social media influencer who praised Hamas’ actions on October 7.
