At least 36 people, including children, died in crushing a political gathering in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
Tens of thousands of people gathered on Saturday at an event of a campaign for the actor who turned into the politician Vigay, in the southern Karour region.

The politician Sintel Palaji spoke to journalists outside a local hospital to confirm deaths, adding that more than 50 other people were injured.

Prime Minister Tamil Nadu MK Stalin said that some people were taken to hospital after fainting in crushing. He added that additional assistance was requested by doctors working in the nearby areas.
Stalin added that compensation of one million rupees ($ 11,300; 8,400 pounds) will be provided to the families of the deceased, and there will be an investigation into the accident.
In an online statement, Vijay said his heart was “broken” and was in “unimaginable and sad pain.”
He sent “deepest sympathy and condolences” to the families of those who died, and it is suitable for “rapid recovery” for those in the hospital.
The Prime Minister in India Narendra Modi said the accident was “unfortunate” and “deep sadness”, in a post on X.
