Unlike the brand of President Donald Trump for India as “the King of tariff”, official data shows that the United States also meets some of the world’s highest tariffs on major imports – including dairy, tobacco and food products – in line with common protection practices among major economies.
While the average simple tariff in India is 17 %, the weighted average American export to India is less than 5 %, which is much lower than Trump’s descriptions.
The 100 best American export elements formed 75 % of imports in India $ 42.2 billion from America in 2023-1024, most of them attract duties much lower than the National Mediterranean of India.
The World Trade Organization stated that the United States imposes definitions of up to 350 % on tobacco, 200 % on dairy, and more than 130 % on fruits, vegetables and grains.
Likewise, India’s duties – such as 150 % on whiskey and wine or 125 % on certain cars – are in line with countries like Japan (400 % on rice) and Korea (up to 887 % on products).
Meanwhile, the contradictions in commercial data continue to complicate negotiations. American numbers constantly show higher imports than India compared to export records in India. In 2024, Washington told $ 87.4 billion of Indian imports, while New Delhi included only $ 80.7 billion – a difference of 6.7 billion dollars. A similar gap worth $ 8 billion was reported in 2023.
Trade and revenue departments in India reconcile this mismatch. An official pointed out, in times of economics, that global databases depend on self-reported tariff data in India, while American numbers are usually withdrawn from the World Trade Organization’s records-which proves an incompatibility that can distort trade negotiations.
