‘Does he deserve to die?’: Relatives of trapped miners in South Africa condemn police operation

The rescue operation at the Stilfontein mine in South Africa has ended after 248 live miners and 78 bodies were recovered from underground. A botched police operation aimed at “evicting” illegal miners from an abandoned gold mine by preventing food and medicine from being sent to them has led to reports of cannibalism, starvation and accusations of human rights abuses.
