Video from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, sparked widespread outrage and heated discussions online after it showed a neighborhood covered in snow and filled with piles of trash bags. Although the video did not identify who was responsible, many on social media were quick to point the finger at Indian international students, leading to a wave of criticism directed at immigrants, especially those from India.
The 25-second video, initially uploaded to TikTok and later shared on X (formerly Twitter), depicts a man expressing dismay at the state of his once-charming neighborhood. As the camera panned across the area filled with trash bags, the man said, “This is the neighborhood I grew up in. It was a nice neighborhood. It was a nice neighborhood.” It was a really good place to live.” He describes the scene as “disgusting.”
The video shows on-screen text blaming “international students” for illegally dumping trash in the area.
The post sparked a wave of reactions, many of which directly targeted Indian immigrants.
One user commented: “You import Indians and become India. Good luck, Canada.” Another wrote: “This is normal for Indian people. They are used to living in a bad condition.” A third user added: “It’s their culture to be dirty.”
Some users compared the situation to conditions in India, with one commenting: “Are you surprised? Take one look at Delhi.” Others expressed frustration with the changes in their neighborhoods. “It’s the same everywhere. My neighbors sold their house; now 10 students live there, and it’s a mess. Everything that used to have such beautiful views has been destroyed,” another lamented.
Amid the deluge of vitriol, a handful of users hit back at the anti-India rhetoric. “I’ve been seeing white people doing this to indigenous lands my whole life. You’re all just racists,” one user commented. Another pointed out potential flaws in municipal services, saying: “Seems like the city is slacking off on delivery services?”
This incident highlights the growing trend of blaming immigrants, especially Indians, for various issues in Canada. Previously, a Canadian citizen alleged that Indian women were traveling to Canada to give birth and secure citizenship for their children. While sharing his personal experience, he claimed that while his niece was in the hospital’s maternity ward, a nurse mentioned that the ward was “full of foreign Indian women” who had come to Canada only to give birth to their babies.
The man further alleged that these women return to India with their Canadian-born children, who then use their citizenship to return and take care of their families. He wrote on You see, they come back to India with their child after they use our healthcare system.
