Deonte Brown defeats Machuca to win the WBC belt

Deonte Brown (17-0(11) defeated Grimardi Machuca (17-3(14)) by 10-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant Pan American super featherweight title on Friday night at Commerce Casino, Commerce, Calif.

In the first three rounds, previously unbeaten Machuca is coming off a pair of losses, looking to bounce back in a close fight. In the fourth and fifth rounds, Brown outlasted Machuca.

In the sixth and seventh rounds, Machuca continues to advance as the southpaw counters Brown with his left. In the last minute of the eighth round, a collision of heads occurred as referee Thomas Taylor examined them.

In the ninth round, Brown with his hands at his side tackles Machua. In the tenth and final round, Brown appeared to be ahead while Machuca had trouble landing.

The scores were 96-94, 96-94, and 97-93.

In the co-feature, bantamweight Saul Sanchez (21-4-1(12)) finished in an eight-round victory over Edwin Rodriguez (12-9-3(5).

In the first three rounds, the aggressive Sanchez had the advantage to avenge his loss to Rodriguez six years ago. In the fourth through sixth rounds, Rodriguez countered well, taking the round.

In the fifth and sixth rounds, Rodriguez was more aggressive at first before falling back on the counter. In the seventh round, Rodriguez suffered severe swelling under his right eye and was examined by the ring doctor between rounds. In the eighth and final round, Rodriguez had the advantage in a close round.

The scores were 78-74 for Sanchez, 76-76 and 76-76. Gerard White was the referee.

Light welterweight Angel ‘Sharpie’ Perez (10-0-1(8)) knocked out Sachin Rohila (8-4(2) at 2:04 of the first round of a scheduled four-round bout.

In the first round, Perez landed a left hook to the body, and Rohilla fell to the count of referee David Sullivan.

Super bantamweight Cornelio Phipps (6-0(2)) defeated Jesse “Super” Mandabat (9-3-1(5) by six-round split decision.

In the second round, Phipps hurt Mandapat with a left hook to the chin in the first minute, taking another round. In the third and fourth rounds, Mandabat returned well and won the two close rounds. In the sixth and final round, they each had their own moments. In a close fight, Phipps might have won.

The scores are 59-55 FIPS, 58-56 Mandabat, and 58-56 FIPS. Gerard White was the referee.

Light welterweight Krzytic Bazaldua (6-2(1)) lost a close six-round unanimous decision to Darian Castro (4-0(1). Bazaldua scored the only knockout.

In the second round, a straight shot from Bazaldua to the chin of Castro dropped him for an eight count from referee David Sullivan. Castro immediately got up and fought well. Midway through the third round, Castro hurt Bazaldua with a combination of blows, taking the round.

In the final minute of the fourth round, Castro drew blood from Bazaldua’s mouth with an overhand left kick. In the fifth round, Bazaldua returned in a close round. In the sixth and final round, with his hands at his side, Castro went to the body of Bazaldua in what was ultimately a close fight.

The scores were 57-56, 57-56, and 58-55.

Super featherweight Jorge Onis Ruiz (2-0(2)) stopped Prince Martin (1-3-1(1) at 1:46 of the second of a scheduled four-rounder.

In the second round, referee Thomas Taylor called for the contest to be stopped.

Super featherweight Narek Hovhannisyan (2-0(1)) knocked out Eric Howard (7-4(2) at 0:42 of the fourth and final round.

In the fourth round, referee David Sullivan asked to stop.

Welterweight Kamari Burnside (2-0) defeated Obed Sepulveda (1-9, 1 KO) by four-round unanimous decision.

The scores were 39-37, 39-37, and 40-36. Gerald White was the referee.

Light welterweight Isaiah Garcia (1-0) defeated Clayton Hibbert, 2-10 (2), by four round disqualification. In the fourth round, referee Gerald White DQ’d Hibbert.

Defeated 2020 Olympian Shackelia Ellis (1-0). Maria “Polfuareta” Salinas (27-13-6(16) via six-round unanimous decision.

In the first three rounds, Ellis was outmaneuvering the aggressive Salinas. In the fourth and fifth rounds, former Olympian Ellis faced four-time world title challenger Salinas.

In the sixth and final round, Ellis became the aggressor and took control of the bout against Salinas.

The scores were 60-54, 58-56, and 59-55. Thomas Taylor was the referee.
