Legendary Indian pacer Sunil Gavaskar was in the news recently due to his bold and controversial comments in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gavaskar once again hit the headlines at the end of the Test series.
Australia won the final Test match in Sydney to clinch the series 3-1. During the post-match parade, Australian captain Pat Cummins received the Border-Gavaskar Award from legendary Australian cricketer Allan Border.
While Border was on hand to hand over the trophy to Australia, Gavaskar watched from the sidelines. He applauded when Cummins received the trophy before the other Australian players joined their captain in the celebrations.

Sunil Gavaskar criticizes Australian cricket
Later, Gavaskar was asked about his absence from the post-match presentation ceremony. He claimed that he would have liked to have been there at the presentation as the trophy was also named after him.
“I would certainly have liked to have been there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Award and it is about Australia and India.
Gavaskar also criticized Cricket Australia for its decision to ignore him from the ceremony because he is Indian. Cricket Australia had earlier planned that Gavaskar would present the trophy only if the series ended in a 2-2 draw and India retained the trophy but if Australia won the series, it would be Allan Border who would hand it over.
“I mean I’m here on the ground. For me, Australia winning doesn’t matter when it comes to presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That’s good. Just because I’m an Indian (I didn’t present the trophy). I would have been happy,” the legendary Indian batsman added. Presenting the trophy with my dear friend Alain Border.

Reacting to Sunil Gavaskar’s comments, Cricket Australia clarified its stance and admitted that it would have been better for both legends to be at the same stage to hand over the trophy.
“We acknowledge that it would have been better if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar were on stage,” Cricket Australia stated.
While Cricket Australia issued a statement, they preferred not to give any specific reason to justify Gavaskar’s omission from the stage. Gavaskar was with the commentary panel during the trophy presentation and left only after all the work was done.
Australia reclaims the Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Meanwhile, Australia completed their famous win in Sydney and retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy a decade later. Australia last won the title in the 2014-25 season when they defeated India 2-0 at home.
Since that win, India and Australia have faced off four times – twice in India and twice in Australia. India won all the series by 2-1 margins which also included two historic Test series wins in 2018-19 and 2020-21, both on Australian soil.
