During the December 21 episode, Jost and his “Weekend Update” co-host Michael Che took part in the famous segment of reading jokes written by the other. Jost hesitated before introducing the part, saying, “I want to dedicate this next joke to my friend Scarlett Johansson.” When the camera panned to Johansson, watching from backstage, she looked visibly worried.

Jost continued to make jokes about Johansson’s recent 40th birthday and their family life. “Hey, you all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday, which means I’m about to get out of there,” he joked, laughing while his wife looked puzzled.

The joke escalated when Jost claimed, “We had a baby together, and you haven’t seen any pictures of him yet because he’s black as hell.” An edited photo of the couple with a black baby appeared on the screen, leaving the audience and Jost in fits of laughter.

The clip also included a racy roast beef joke that referenced Johansson’s postpartum experience. “Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu, but I’m not tripping,” Jost admitted. “I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the baby. … Nah, nah, I’m just playing, baby.”

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jost recounted his wife’s reaction, saying, “I think I’m in trouble with a lot of people. Scarlett was really shocked.”

He added that “SNL” producers gave Johansson warning about the joke’s content, but even that didn’t prepare her for delivery. “They were like, ‘Hey, would you be okay if Michael (Che) made some kind of joke at some point?'” Jost explained. “She was like, ‘Sure, you know, whatever, I’m open to it.'” However, when the drawing of Arby’s roast beef appeared on the screen, Johansson was surprised.
