MBOKO first presented for the WTA tour in March and took Gauf to three groups in Rome at its second event.
“I was really thinking about it a lot during the match,” Mbuko said. “I had the memories of the past when I played it in Rome a little. I only remember when I went out playing better and raising a little better.
“I wanted to do my game a little more and make sure that I was matching everything she was producing, and I wanted to stay there with her.”
