China hosts the Pacific Island countries in an attempt to enhance diplomatic and trade relations news

Foreign Minister Wang Yi is a senior diplomat from 11 countries in the Pacific Ocean in the Chinese city of Xiamen.

China hosts a high -level meeting with 11 countries of the Pacific Island, as it seeks to deepen relations and build what a “closer” society calls a “common future” society in the strategic region.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi chairs the meeting in the city of Xiaine on Wednesday.

The President of Kiribati, Tanity Mama, and the highest diplomats from Newy, Tonga, Nauru, Micronesia, Suleiman Islands, Vanuao, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Fiji and Samoa.

The two -day meeting is the third such, but the first person to happen personally in China.

Universal uncertainty

The meeting comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has reduced foreign aid and threatened the customs tariff that supports global uncertainty. Analysts say this has left the door open to China to intervene.

“This lack of certainty makes the United States a very difficult partner to work with it,” Tess Newton said at the Griffiths Asia Institute. “While other partners, including China, they can present it, you know that we were here yesterday, and we are here today, and we expect to be here tomorrow.”

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which announces the meeting last week, said that the goal of the meeting is to “build a community of China and the Pacific Islands jointly with a common future.”

Analysts say that for Beijing, this translates into greater economic assistance, diplomatic participation and the pursuit of a regional security agreement.

China has already signed a security agreement with the Suleiman Islands in 2022, that is, a year after the police deployed on the ground in the capital, Honara, following a series of riots there.

Beijing has also sent consultants to Vanu’u and Kiribati and wants to close in a similar agreement with other island countries.

“What China is trying to do … is to include itself as a security player and in some cases through the angle of contributing to the individual security needs of the Pacific countries like the police,” said Mihai Sora, Director of the Pacific Islands Program at the Louis Institute in Australia.

He added that the meeting in Xiamen is a “opportunity for China” to push its goals “in its own area, on its grass and its own conditions.”

Taiwan
