Carney seeks to obtain partnerships with “similar” nations in return in the UK – National

Carney was scheduled to meet on Friday with the Danish Prime Minister, but this meeting was canceled.

Four drones flew over the Danish airports on Wednesday night until Thursday morning, which sparked security concerns linked to the recent Russian incursions into the airspace of NATO countries.

Carney participated in a panel discussion on Friday at the Global Action Summit to apply with British Prime Minister Kiir Starmer, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albaniz and Prime Minister in Iceland, Kristrún Frostadótir.

The committee focused on how political parties in the center compete with the growing right -wing populism.

Carney said that the “similar thinking” countries should work together in the face of the economic and geopolitical “rupture” of the agenda of US President Donald Trump.

“We have learned the lesson that we … need to be masters in our home. We cannot rely on one commercial partner. We can treat it by building at home and diversification,” Carney said.

“We have to make sure of the similar commercial partners around the world. This is not everyone in the world, but the countries that share our values, which is a common commitment to open markets.”

Senior government officials who speak on the background described this journey as an opportunity for face time with world leaders to enhance commercial partnerships, business and security as Canada is looking to reduce its dependence on the United States.

This is the fourth Carney meeting with Starmer since he took office. This is the first time that the Prime Minister has met personally with Australian, Icelandic and Spanish leaders.

This last international trip comes after Carney’s recent visits to Mexico City and the United Nations General Assembly in New York, and after he hosted the leaders of Indonesia and Ireland in Ottawa before his departure.

Conservatives criticized Carney international flights, saying they have not produced concrete results in Canada.

The UK High Commissioner in Canada, Ralph Judal, said that these meetings lay the basis for closer economic and security relations.

“It was very important for them to speak face to face, and from this giving the instructions of their officials on how to see progress in some of the areas I made at the end of this year,” said Godal.

“They can be done electronically, but … the presence of these two physical ministers in the same room and talk directly with each other is very important.”

During their meeting, Carney discussed and Canada has continued to support the United Kingdom to become a member of the comprehensive and progressive agreement of the Pacific partnership, a trade agreement in the first place in the Pacific countries.

On Monday in New York, Carney pointed out that Canada is a founding member of CPTPP and has a free trade agreement with the European Union.

Some have suggested that the European Union can join CPTPP – which will provide major global markets as a way to reduce the damage caused by Chinese and American forced trade policies. Others say that the European Union can simply agree to trading more with CPTPP countries.

Carney said on Monday that Canada is part of these discussions, but “the first days are still.”

The Vice President of the Asia Pacific Foundation in Vienna Nadjipola said any talk about trade cooperation is good news.

“For Canada, this is great, because it indicates that we are able to combine Indian, Pacific and Atlantic partners,” she said.

Canada and the United Kingdom still have a bilateral trade deal. The two countries use a temporary deal from April 2021, when the UK left the European Union.

Both countries launched talks on a permanent deal a year later, but London suspended negotiations in January 2024. The two countries have been on a dead end, with Britain banning hormone treated beef from Canada and UK farmers calling for more cheese exports to Canada.

“We will want to see some progress in these issues so that our producers can reach the British market on an equal footing with the arrival of British producers to the Canadian market.”

Godal said he believed that there is a “landing zone” for renewable commercial conversations and noted that the vast majority of goods circulating between the two countries are free of customs tariffs.

Carney and Starmer also discussed their recent recognition of the Palestinian state, the ongoing struggle in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine.

Nadjipola said that Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia want a deeper cooperation in response to instability from Washington.

She said that Australia, for example, is trying to obtain clarity from the United States about the future of its security partnership in Aukus with London and Washington.

She said: “Canada has this unique geography, which sits in the middle of these two theaters, and we can be that bridge between democracies, allies and partners in the Indian Pacific Ocean and in the European Atlantic, on the security and defense side (and) also on the economic side.”

Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the United States are allies in the five intelligence participation partnership.

While Carney focused and continued on the areas of agreement, they did not agree with firmness on one topic: the women’s game.

The two leaders introduced each other to the national teams of women in their countries, which will start in the FIFA World Cup final for women on Saturday.
