Prime Minister Mark Carney will soon travel to Europe in an attempt to deepen economic and security relations with Germany.
Carney told reporters on Friday that he would meet German Chancellor Fredchich Mirz in Berlin on Tuesday.
“Canada has a good partnership with Germany,” he said.
Carney said he would begin “picking up discussions” with Mirz in the spring, when the couple met in Rome, and later at the G7 summit in Alberta.
Carney said he would look forward to deepening opportunities under the commercial agreement in Canada with the European Union, the comprehensive economic and commercial agreement (CETA).
“There is a wide range of fields, from critical minerals to energy, defense and security, as we increase our discussions with Germany,” he said.
Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, Defense Secretary David McGanette and Minister of Industry, Missian Julie Carne, will be accompanied on the trip.
The German government announced the planned meeting before the press conference on Friday.
Berlin’s statement said that the two leaders are expected to discuss current foreign and economic policy issues.
The European trip comes as attempts to mediate peace in Ukraine. This week’s war rose after Alaska’s peace talks failed to secure a ceasefire and Russia fired one of its heavier arches against Ukraine in weeks.
Carney was part of multiple virtual meetings of the “Rispare Alliance”, a mass of nations including Canada and Germany seeking to strengthen Ukraine in its war with Russia.
