Trainer Angel Garcia says Canelo Alvarez looked like an “exhausted” fighter in his loss to Terence Crawford on September 13.
Angle believes Canelo’s last three fights have brought something out of him. The combination of a long career, wars with Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin and the last several fights has taken a lot out of Mexican superstar Alvarez.
Too many wars, too many miles
“Canelo looks like he’s on fire,” Angel Garcia said. Fighthypewhich mirrors Canelo Alvarez’s performance against Terence Crawford on September 13. “Canelo had three fights. Then he fought GGG. He hit Canelo with some shots.”
Many fans echo Angel’s sentiments about Canelo looking like a “burnt out” shell of the fighter he once was. However, it didn’t take the performance against Crawford to determine that. He has shown that he is no longer his old Canelo self since his loss to Dmitry Bivol eight fights ago on May 7, 2022.
Crawford revealed the decline
Bravo to Crawford for noticing the slip and campaigning for the Canelo fight. Turki Alalsheikh has linked him to the Alvarez fight, and has not insisted on jumping through the hoop by fighting any of the main middleweight heavyweights, such as Christian Mbele or Owsley Iglesias, which might ruin his legacy.
Muscle Fade: Canelo’s physical decline
Physically, Canelo, 35, looks like his physique has diminished in muscle compared to how he looked in his three fights against GGG. Starting at 35 years old, he still has a lot of hard miles to go in his battles against the biggest names in the sport.
Two battles left – and a big problem ahead
He has two more fights remaining on his contract with Turki Alashik, but unless they are approached carefully, he will likely lose both. At this point, Canelo would be vulnerable to any of the top five contenders at 168, some even lower.
If Turk insists that Canelo fight some talented super middleweight contender, he will lose and likely be eliminated. Partnering Canelo with Mbele, Iglesias or Lester Martinez would be a problem. These younger fighters were jumping on Alvarez from the start, burying him with power shots, and forcing him to fight hard every round.
It will be interesting to watch as a spectator to see if Canelo is able to pull off some of his old magic, but most likely, it will end badly for him with his coach Eddy Reynoso giving up.
