Canada follows France and the United Kingdom with a plan to recognize the Palestinian state

Prime Minister Mark Carney said that Canada is planning to recognize a Palestinian state in September, and it became the third G7 to this declaration in recent days.

Carney said this step depends on democratic reforms, including the Palestinian Authority that is taking place next year without Hamas.

His remarks come a day after the United Kingdom announced that it will get to know a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees on the ceasefire and other conditions and a week after France revealed a similar plan.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry refused to announce Canada, describing it as a “reward for Hamas.” Most countries – 147 of 193 United Nations member states – formally recognize the Palestinian state.

Carney said that Canada will officially get to know the situation of Palestine in the next United Nations General Assembly.

He pointed to the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, the growing humanitarian situation in Gaza, and October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas as reasons behind the dramatic transformation in Canada in foreign policy.

“The level of human suffering in Gaza is unbearable and deteriorates quickly,” Carney told reporters on Wednesday.

He said that recognition of a Palestinian state will depend on the Palestinian Authority’s obligations to reform its governance mainly and communicate the region.

Carney said that a long time ago is committed to a solution from the two countries as part of a negotiating peace process, but he added, “This approach is no longer applicable.”

He said, “The possibility of a Palestinian state is eroding before our eyes.”

Carney told the press conference that he had spoken with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas earlier on Wednesday about the announcement.

The Palestinian Authority controls parts of the West Bank through the Fatah party, led by Abbas, while running Hamas. None of the land has been elections since 2006.

Carney was criticized by the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

He said in a post on X that Canada’s plan “is harmful to the efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and a framework for the hostage.”

Conservatives in Canada also assumed a problem with Carney’s announcement.

“The realization of a Palestinian state in the wake of terrorist atrocities on October 7 is sending the wrong message to the world,” the opposition party said in a statement.

The Prime Minister has been pressured to address the Palestinian state since the United Kingdom and France – the allies of those close to Canada – have come out with their own statements on the case in recent days.

Former Canadian ambassadors and diplomats signed a speech on Tuesday, calling Carney to recognize a Palestinian state.

If France and the United Kingdom officially recognize the Palestinian state, the United States – a strong ally of Israel – will be the only permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for not doing so.

The Israeli army launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas -led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, where about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others took hostage.

Since then, more than 60,000 people have been killed in Gaza, and 154 people have died, including 89 children, due to malnutrition, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health in the region.
