This morning, Marvel gave us ours The long-awaited first look in Daredevil: Born againa revival/continuation of the beloved Netflix series e.g New chapter From the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s full of rage and brutality, but also full of interesting hints about who will return from the original show, who will be added to the MCU this time around, and what comic stories will inspire Matt Murdock’s return to the vigilante business. Let’s take a look at who he is, shall we?

The return of the dream team

Early in the trailer, which revolves around a tense (but not exactly unpleasant) encounter between Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock, we get an acknowledgment that it’s been a long time since the events of Netflix recklessseries, and Long awaited confirmation Things, for now at least, seem to be good between this show’s main returning trio: Matt, his non-crime partner Foggy Nelson, and of course, Karen Page. In early versions of the show’s return, neither Deborah Ann Woll nor Elden Henson were scheduled to appear. We’re glad they’re finally back, but they’re not in This trailer is pretty much… and that could tease some bad things to come, especially as we grapple with Matt Murdock being retired from the waking world when the series begins.

Mayor Fisk

A lot has changed for Matt, but a lot has changed for Fisk as well, as we’ve seen him take on a big new role Mayor of New York. It’s Been a Long Time Too: The MCU started setting up this arc for Fisk after he returned to the MCU in hook during Post-credits echoAnd now we will see it flourish Born again. The plot twist to put Fisk at the top of the political chain comes from recent Marvel Comics history – Fisk became mayor while Charles Soule and Stefano Landini were running. reckless In late 2017, after events Secret Empire It saw him play a key role in protecting the citizens of New York after Hydra sealed Manhattan in a bubble of Darkforce energy during its plot to take over America.

In the comics, Fisk ran as an independent (and the vote held steady even with his popular support running on an anti-nativist platform), and eventually appointed Matt himself to be deputy mayor, who used the position to try to undermine Fisk and eventually confronted him as Daredevil, hoping to catch him red-handed. By criminal action and stripping him of his newfound power. In fact, Fisk has been mayor of New York for a long time, and was only impeached during the height of the 2022 series of events Satan’s reignhaving attempted to completely ban vigilantes in New York and work with the Purple Man to try to force the city to re-elect him as mayor, and also rediscover his lost knowledge of Daredevil’s alter ego. After being stopped by Matt and Elektra (both of whom were operating as Daredevil at the time), Fisk was briefly imprisoned, allowing Luke Cage to win the mayoral election by default.

Familiar enemy…

We got a brief, interesting shot during the middle trailer of at least one returning villain from the Netflix series other than Fisk himself: Wilson Bethel Bullseye. Shown here being led through a prison by armed guards, when we last saw him on the Netflix show, Ben Poindexter had been arrested after going rogue since he was Fisk’s personal assassin, which led to him trying to kill Fisk and his wife Vanessa during their wedding. . After Poindexter was incapacitated by Daredevil and Fisk working together, he was paralyzed during the attack, leading to him accepting a mysterious experimental spinal surgery that also apparently gave him his enhanced marksmanship abilities from the comics. Considering he’s walking here, it looks like the risky surgery has paid off.

And a new one?

But we’re also getting new villains making their debut as well. One person in particular’s handiwork is glimpsed throughout the trailer, and we can see him in action briefly as well: This white mystery with the smeared mask is Moses. Created in 2016 by Soule and the aforementioned artist Ron Garney, Muse — whose identity has never been actually revealed — was a mutant serial killer who graphically murdered targets before displaying them in gruesome works of performance art. In the comics, he evaded capture several times before eventually breaking out of prison during Fisk’s mayoralty, before eventually being defeated by Daredevil and Blindspot (whom Moses had previously blinded), leading to his suicide.

One thing seems unclear here as to what will happen Born again These are the powers of Moses. In the comics, he has superhuman strength and speed, as well as a strange sensory absorption effect: Musa’s body can effectively suppress sensory information surrounding him, making him imperceptible to even Daredevil’s enhanced senses.

Enemies old and new

The trailer also gives us some additional shots of returning faces from the Netflix show in the form of Ayelet Zurer, who plays Fisk’s now-wife, Vanessa (Sandrine Hoult was previously cast in the role, before that). Born againcreative reboot), and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher buries the hatchet with Matt. Season 2 of Frank’s special series concluded with him fully embracing the mantle of the Punisher, turning down a deal to work wet jobs for the CIA to take his violent crusade against the criminal underworld in new directions. Where he and Matt reunite remains to be seen, but what happened to the Punisher in a world where Daredevil has temporarily retired?

A new hero rises

Another really interesting new character we get a look at in the trailer is a man wearing a familiar white mask: this is Hector Ayala, also known as the superhero White Tiger. Playing his final role before his death in 2023, Kamar de los Reyes Ayala is the first of many characters to take up the mantle of the White Panther in Marvel comics, a legacy that continues to include his younger sister, Ava. First appearing in 1975, the White Tiger is granted superhuman strength through the amulet he wears around his neck, summoning the powers of the Great Tiger God, allowing him to access superhuman strength and agility, as well as rapid healing and enhanced senses.

New suit(s).

One of the last and most interesting glimpses we see in the trailer is Matt looking through a full set of Daredevil masks. While throughout the trailer we see him wearing an updated version of his iconic red suit, the different cowl here suggests a series of throwbacks to Daredevil’s comic history. The most obvious is the yellow mask from the suit we saw him wearing during his appearance She-Hulkis inspired by the first costume worn by Daredevil in the comics, but there’s also a red hood here, and both appear to be previous versions of his current suit seen throughout the Netflix series.

The black hood could be a reference to one of the two suits that Daredevil has worn in the comics: his armored gear that he first donned after a battle with the Wild Pack, or the all-black “Shadowlands” suit, from when Matt took over leadership of the pack. Hand ninja clan and found himself corrupted by the mysterious patron demon, Beast. The most interesting addition here is the one on the left, which is a silver-white mask that has only one similarity in the comics: during the 2023 relaunch. reckless With creative team Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, Matt begins working as a priest, eventually teaming up with Doctor Strange to confront his inner demons. The end result was an all-white, “purified” version of his regular suit.
