Biden aide Kelly Scully says the former president is “currently undergoing radiation and hormone therapy.”

Former US President Joe Biden is undergoing radiotherapy and hormone therapy to fight prostate cancer that was diagnosed in May, his spokesman said.

“As part of his prostate cancer treatment plan, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone therapy,” Biden aide Kelly Scully said on Saturday.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, according to the American Cancer Society.

It is especially common in older people, with research estimates that about 80% of men over the age of 80 have some cancer cells in the prostate gland.

The organization said that although it is highly treatable if detected early, it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men.

Hormone therapy is a common treatment that can shrink tumors and slow the growth of cancer, but it is not a cure.

Prostate cancers are graded in terms of aggressiveness using what is known as the Gleason score. Scores range from 6 to 10, with 8, 9 and 10 prostate cancers behaving more aggressively.

Biden’s office said his score was 9, indicating that his cancer is among the most aggressive, but that the disease is sensitive to hormones, meaning it is more likely to respond to treatment.

Biden, who turns 83 next month, underwent a procedure known as Mohs surgery to remove skin cancer lesions from his forehead in September.
