Bendorm cracks on the “offensive” elements in the windows of the stores

The Spanish benidorm resort is forming in stores that display obscene or “offensive” elements in its windows – for fear of distorting the image of the area and removing passers -by.

Father items include jokes and souvenirs that contain sexual messages on them, which tend to be displayed in the so-called “others”-the central region that meets foreign tourists.

Products are often announced in English, due to the large number of British people visiting every year.

Javier Gorda, head of trade in the city hall, said that the campaign was about “ensuring that minors or weak societies are not exposed to offensive messages in public places.”

He added that “certain commercial activities have been discovered that could be considered inconsistent” with Benidorm laws.

Benidorm is located on the eastern Mediterranean coast in Spain, and is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the country, attracting nearly three million visitors last year. More than 830,000 of these were British.

Local laws stipulate that shopping windows “should not display products that may hurt the ethical sensitivity to people” and give an example “exciting articles.” The regulation does not affect the elements sold in the interior of the stores.

The conservative local authorities in Benidorm began by reminding the store owners of shopping and asking them to remove them from their windows or the entrances of any elements that can be considered violated.

If they do not, the next step is to take penalties, which can include fines of up to 3000 euros (2,614 pounds).

But Mr. Gorda said he hoped that such measures would not be necessary.

“We do not want to come to that, but we must ensure respect for the rule and that the correct image is given to the city,” he said.

Spain received 94 million foreign visitors last year – a new record – as the United Kingdom, France and Germany presented the largest numbers.

The most popular destinations are resorts along the Mediterranean coast, such as benidorm, or in the Canary Islands and Bales.

However, the tourism industry in Spain recently is trying to move away from the sun model and sand that the country is famous for due to concerns about excessive tourism, which led to protests.
