Barcelona’s La Liga match with Villarreal has been officially moved to Miami, marking the first time a Europa League match has been held abroad.

After UEFA reluctantly agreed Earlier this week, the league confirmed the move to the United States on December 20.

“This is one match out of 380 that make up the season,” said Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish League.

“La Liga represents millions of fans around the world, including many fans who passionately follow their teams and deserve the opportunity to experience seeing them live at least once.

“This match aims to bring our football closer to the global fanbase without diminishing our commitment to those who enjoy it week after week in stadiums across Spain.”

The match will be held at Hard Rock Stadium, which has a capacity of 65,000 spectators, home of the Miami Dolphins.

UEFA stressed its clear opposition to the game being held abroad, but actually admitted that it was unable to stop matches being held abroad due to the lack of a legal framework within which it could do so.

Milan is scheduled to face Como in Perth, Australia, next February.
