The authorities said on Saturday that the heavy floods after heavy rains in the eastern Congo were overwhelmed by several villages along the shores of Lake Tanganica, leaving at least 62 dead and 50 missing.
Witnesses described the floods that rose at about 5 am local time on Friday and sweeping the village of Kasaba on the edge of the lake in the Nganda sector.
The Minister of Health in South Kevo, Theovili and Lulka Mozalio, said on the phone that the rescue operation had been hindered due to the lack of services and the closure of phone lines due to floods.
He said: “The heads of the sectors, village heads and headquarters, who are also members of the local government are at the site. The only human organization currently exists is the Red Cross. An evaluation cannot be performed as searches for the body continues.”
Last month, Kinshasa flooded, Kinshasa, killed 33 people.
Contracts of fighting between government forces and rebels in the eastern Congo in February increased, which increased what is already one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world.
