At least 60 people were killed in a drone strike on a shelter for displaced people in El Fasher, a besieged Sudanese city on the brink of collapse.

The El Fasher Resistance Committee, made up of citizens and local activists, said the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces bombed the Dar al-Arqam camp. It is located inside a university, and was subjected to two drone strikes and eight artillery shells.

A statement by the group, according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse, said: “Children, women and the elderly were killed in cold blood, and many of them were completely burned.”

The Rapid Support Forces have besieged the city of El Fasher for 17 months in an attempt to control the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region.

The resistance group said that the situation in El Fasher “has gone beyond disaster and genocide.”

Hunger and disease have spread across the city, as residents face constant bombing and dwindling food and medical supplies.

Conflict has ravaged Sudan since 2023, after a dispute between senior leaders of the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army, and a fierce power struggle ensued – leading to one of the worst humanitarian crises.
