At least 60 people died and dozens of other dozens were rescued after a boat carrying more than 100 passengers in the state of Nigeria in the north of Niger, according to local officials.
The ship left from the town of Tonggan Sole in the Maleel area at approximately 11 am local time (10:00 GMT) on Tuesday morning, and it was heading towards the town of Douga in the Nigerian Kinji tank.
The Niger Emergency Management Agency (NESMA) said on Wednesday that the accident occurred when an attractive vessel hit an immersed tree near the Gaousawa community in the local governance area.
“The reason is due to excess and collision with the trunk of the trees,” the agency told the local newspaper “Daily Trust”.
Nassima said that women and children were on board the ship, which he said was heading to Duja for a “visit to my condolences.”
Abdullah Baba Ara, General Manager of NSMA and head of the local government region, said that the number of victims was still rising while the rescue operations were continuing “for the potential recovery of missing persons.”
“The number of the accident in the accident increased to 60,” he told Reuters.
He added: “Ten people were found in serious condition, and many are still searching for them.”
Souad Enoa Mohamed, head of Shajumi Province, who was at the scene shortly after the accident, said the boat was carrying “more than 100 people.”
“We managed to restore 31 bodies of the river. The boat was also recovered and removed,” he told Reuters.
Muhammad said that women and children are the majority of the deceased. He added that four victims were already buried according to Islamic rituals.
The accidents of boats are repeated in Nigerian river societies – especially during the rainy season from March to October, when rivers and lakes excel – due to the application of relaxation, overcrowding and ships that are poorly maintained.
In August, more than 40 people were announced missing after a Board coup In the northwestern state of Sokuto in Nigeria, due to excessive loading.
