Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka survived her first Australian Open test, but last year’s finalist Qinwen Zheng suffered a shock second-round exit.
Chinese star Zheng reached her first Grand Slam tournament here last year before winning Olympic gold and establishing herself as one of the best players in the world.
But she failed against 36-year-old German Laura Siegmund, known for her prowess in doubles, and lost 7-6 (7-3) and 6-3.
“I don’t think there’s much to say because I tried my best during this match,” Cheng said. “I feel like today is probably not my day. There are too many details in the important points. I didn’t make the right choice.”
“I knew I had to play beyond my best,” said Siegemund, who earned her first top-10 win since 2022.
“I had nothing to lose, so I told myself to swing free. She’s an amazing player, one of the best right now. But I know I can play and I just wanted to make it a tough fight.”
Sabalenka also faced a problem when she lost 5-2 in the second set to Spain’s Jessica Posas Manero, but the top seed extended her winning streak at Melbourne Park to 16 matches with a 6-3, 7-5 win.
“I am very happy to finish this match in straight sets,” Sabalenka said. “I played great tennis, especially in the second set. I’m really happy that I was able to turn this set around.”
